ReutersAt least five members of a minority Christian community were rescued on Saturday after a Muslim crowd attacked their settlement in eastern Pakistan, police and a community leader said. The crowd, which accused the Christian group of blasphemy, hurled stones and bricks at the police, said Shariq Kamal, the police chief of Sargodha district. The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said the Christian community was "at grave risk to their lives at the hands of the charged mobs". Blasphemy is a sensitive subject in conservative Muslim- majority Pakistan, where just an accusation can lead to a street lynching. A Muslim crowd attacked a Christian community in eastern Pakistan last year, vandalising several churches and setting scores of houses on fire after accusing two of its members of desecrating the Koran.

Haiti is waiting desperately for the first members of a Kenyan-led multinational force tasked with ending the stranglehold of powerful and ultra-violent gangs, but their hoped-for arrival this week was delayed. “The security situation in Haiti cannot wait,” said a spokesperon for the US National Security Council after word emerged of the killings. A Haitian government source had told AFP that a first deployment of the multinational force was expected over the next few days. One big question mark now is how the gangs will respond to the arrival of the Kenya-led force. One possibility behind the change in the intensity of their attacks is that the gangs may be saving ammunition for a big onslaught against the multinational force, Da Rin said.

I read the recent letters to the editor about campus protests (“Comparing antiwar protests 60 years apart,” May 16). I just wish both sides would engage in a some badly needed intellectual honesty. Any time one of them speaks publicly, you can count on hearing the word “but” in the first sentence. Next, protesters who grew up in Roland Park or Scarsdale might stop wearing the keffiyeh. Is it because as recently as a month ago, campus protests and counter-protests hadn’t yet become trendy?

REUTERS/Adnan AbidiSuhel Mansuri, who carries scars from Hindu-Muslim riots that killed dozens in his district of India's capital in 2020, says his vote on Saturday in national elections was for "peace and brotherhood" as divisive religious rhetoric rises. Mansuri and his brother were surrounded by a crowd during the riots in Delhi's most densely populated district and beaten with iron rods and bricks, resulting in multiple bone fractures. The Northeast Delhi constituency elected a BJP lawmaker in the past two national elections, in 2014 and 2019. It's difficult that the BJP will garner any votes here," said Mansuri, in a thought echoed by voters in Mustafabad, including some Hindus. "But if he thinks Muslims will vote for him despite these speeches, then he is mistaken."

REUTERSTaiwan Air Force F-16 aircrafts fly during a patrolling mission at an undisclosed location in Taiwan in this handout image taken on May 23, 2024, released on May 24, 2024. REUTERSChina ended two days of war games around Taiwan, in which it simulated attacks with bombers and practised boarding ships, and Taiwan's defence ministry detailed on Saturday the surge of Chinese warplanes and warships involved. China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, launched the "Joint Sword - 2024A" exercises three days after Lai Ching-te became Taiwan's president, a man Beijing says is a "separatist". On Friday 46 Chinese military planes crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line, which previously served as an unofficial barrier between the two sides, Taiwan's defence ministry said on Saturday. China has over the past four years regularly staged military activities around Taiwan, including large-scale war games in 2022 and in 2023.
