Dear Readers: I’m delighted to make way for your newest advice-giver: R. Eric Thomas, whose “Asking Eric” column will continue to foster the engaging relationship we’ve shared. Six dead after floods, landslides in India's northeastKOLKATA, June 14, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Six people were killed after heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides in a remote corner of India's northeast, officials told AFP Friday. Senior state government official Gopinath Raha said flood waters from the Teesta river had also washed away roads and bridges, temporarily stranding more than 1,500 people. "The water level of the Teesta river surged past the danger mark on Thursday morning, causing severe damage on the roads and disrupting traffic," he told AFP. Sikkim's state disaster agency said rescue operations were underway but damage to the local mobile phone network was hampering relief efforts. Flash floods along the river last year, triggered by a glacial lake bursting its banks, dealt extensive damage to roads and bridges across the state.

I’ll bet you didn’t expect to get a birthday greeting from someone like me who will never in a million years vote for you. If you were happy with yourself, you would not need to do these and other malicious deeds. If you do this admittedly very-difficult thing, your anger, hurt and fear will diminish greatly, and you will no longer need to take evil actions. It won’t be easy to build on these acts of kindness, but you have the courage to change. The world will obviously be better off if you do change your character and behavior, but you, Mr. Trump, will benefit most of all.

"It hit the people like fire," said Awadhesh Prasad of the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), whose base comprises Muslim and lower-caste voters in Uttar Pradesh. "The prime minister and other leaders tried to explain to the people, but by then their mood was set," said Dileep Patel, a state BJP official in Varanasi. The message was echoed in media advertisements and by the regional party's workers in Uttar Pradesh, which a SP spokesperson described as 600,000 strong. In power, Modi successively backed a man from a lower caste and a woman from a tribal group for India's largely symbolic presidency. It won eight of the 17 reserved seats in Uttar Pradesh, compared to 14 the last time.
