Former premier rises to the top
SOUTH Africa's nine provincial legislatures have taken shape, marking the commencement of the 7th Parliament. On Saturday, 15 June Parliament hosted the first sittings of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). The African National Congress’ Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane was elected unopposed as the chairperson of the NCOP. Mtsweni-Tsipane, who is the former premier of Mpumalanga, emphasised the need for transformative leadership, women’s inclusion, and progressive governance in the provinces. The delegates promised to fulfil their duties as permanent delegates to the NCOP or as members of their provincial legislatures to the best of their abilities.

Tinubu laying strong foundation for better Nigeria –Sen Akanbi
Akanbi represented Oyo State, south, senatorial district at the 8th National Assembly. You were part of those that fervently canvassed for votes for President Tinubu in 2023. Secondly, I, singlehandedly came up with another group known as COMBAT ( Coalition Movement for Àsiwaju Bola Ahmed Tiñúbu) in Oyo State. And Oyo State gave Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu the highest surplus in Nigeria, that is 265,000 surplus. The irony is that the people that are benefitting from Oyo State, some never worked for the victory of Àsiwaju.

Security measures are in place for Eid, no specific threats: DMP chief
Law enforcers are taking all kinds of security measures for Eid-ul-Azha, even though there are no specific threats of terror attacks, says Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman. The DMP chief’s remarks came after he inspected the security measures at the National Eidgah on Sunday. Though there have been no specific threats, there will be no concessions regarding the threat of militancy, Rahman said. “We are taking a hard line with everything in mind.”He noted that security measures are in place at every Eid congregation in the capital. No specific threats have been made surrounding Eid-ul-Azha, the RAB chief said.

According to the statement, The Myanmar military is conducting operations against the Arakan Army rebel group in Rakhine State. The Myanmar Navy has been targeting Arakan Army positions from their territorial waters near Saint Martin's Island, with the Arakan Army retaliating. Multiple Myanmar Navy warships are operating near the border and they have informed the Bangladesh Navy about their presence, the ISPR said. The Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard are regularly patrolling the area to monitor the situation, it added.

Ithaca Unveils Two Murals Celebrating Civil Rights History, Community Healing
The unveiling was followed by another mural reveal — centric on community healing — on the Commons in Downtown Ithaca later that afternoon. Kicking off Juneteenth week, these projects both seek to amplify Black voices and stories within Ithaca. The Reimagining Public Safety Collaborative was released to serve as a guide for reimagining public safety in Ithaca and Tompkins County, including healing from racial trauma. Created by PhotoSynthesis Productions and Ithaca Murals, this piece was inspired by the documentary “Move When the Spirit Says Move: The Legacy of Dorothy Foreman Cotton” — which PhotoSynthesis Productions produced. While both murals speak to the experiences and history of Black Ithacans, they do more than just reflect on what’s been done.
