The Election Commission has released a draft list of 42,500 potential polling stations for the parliamentary polls, which will serve some 125 million voters. Despite a higher number of registered voters, the commission has moved to reduce both polling stations and booths, citing management convenience. At a briefing at the Election Bhaban, the commission’s secretary said the draft includes 42,618 possible polling centres, with 244,046 polling booths in total. Previously, one booth was provided for 500 male voters and 400 female voters at a centre of 3,000 voters. In the last election, there were 42,150 polling stations for 119.1 million voters, with 261,472 polling booths in total.

Islami Chhatra Shibir has swept the top three positions in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, clinching the vice-president (VP), general secretary (GS) and assistant general secretary (AGS) posts in its first appearance at the polls. Abu Shadik Kayem secured the VP post by a commanding margin, while his running mate SM Farhad was similarly dominant in the GS race. Police have urged people not to crowd the entrances of Dhaka University during the ongoing counting of votes in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. Dhaka University’s long-awaited student union election has been marred by poor management and scattered irregularities, but not to the extent of being deemed unacceptable, a group of teachers has said. The University Teachers’ Network, which observed Tuesday’s Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) polls, gave its preliminary assessment at a briefing at the Senate Building in the evening. Prof Samina Luthfa of the sociology department, one of the organisers of the network, presented their findings. Rules were applied differently across the eight polling centres, she said, with some candidates blocked from entering, despite regulations allowing them inside. Another organiser, Prof Tahmina Khanam, criticised poor facilities inside polling centres, including shortages of lights, fans, and drinking water.
