Economy Minister Luis Caputo said Thursday that the Argentine government is engaged in “informal talks” with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) about a new deal that could bring fresh funds to the country. The same day, Fund spokeswoman Julie Kozack confirmed that country authorities are “exploring” a potential new agreement. Caputo also said that Argentina is set to have a “closer relationship with the United States,” referencing Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory. The country is currently under an Extended Fund Facility agreement with the Fund, signed in 2022 during Alberto Fernández’s administration. That deal was struck after that Peronist government renegotiated the US$44 billion debt former President Mauricio Macri had acquired in 2018.

The issue spiralled when high-ranking government officials, including Villarruel, accused Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof of spreading “pornographic literature” in public schools through a government program called Identidades Bonaerenses. Along with Reyes’ Eartheater, members and supporters of the ruling La Libertad Avanza coalition have denounced other works included in the program. “The people of Buenos Aires don’t deserve the degradation and immorality @Kicillofok is offering them,” wrote Villarruel on X on November 7. Buenos Aires governor Axel Kicillof — a father of two boys — responded to the controversy on November 17 by posting a picture of himself on X reading Eartheater. TelegramI clocked on earlier this week to this message: “Valeeeeeen a translation trouble. If I’m being honest, I think this is more a question of cultural differences than translation trouble because I guess the understandable question was, who even uses actual telegrams anymore? By law, when you leave one job (by choice or not), you go to the Post Office and fill out a form to send a free telegram to your soon-to-be former employer. You’re allowed a maximum of 25 words, which the Post Office then plugs into its telegraph system; the message you wrote out is placed in a sealed letter and delivered in person. Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas has requested the arrest of 61 Brazilians who are living in Argentina and were convicted in Brazil for participating in the January 2023 storming of government buildings. Some who were sentenced or indicted escaped their house arrest in Brazil and moved to Argentina. According to official data, 181 Brazilians requested political asylum in Argentina in 2024 through the National Refugee Commission. However, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich told CNN Brazil on Saturday that the Argentine security forces will look for the fugitives. He added that if he were in the same situation as some of the convicted Brazilians, he would not feel at ease.

Argentina’s Economy Ministry announced Friday that the public sector had a AR$523.4 billion financial surplus in October — the ninth consecutive month in which the national government registered a positive fiscal balance. Javier Milei, who campaigned on building surpluses, has been able to achieve his aims by enacting abrupt and often draconian austerity measures. The primary fiscal balance represents the difference between a government’s revenues and its expenditures, whereas the financial balance constitutes that difference plus net interest payments on public debt. “In other words, the difference in financial results versus October 2023 is AR$1.8 trillion.”According to Caputo, the cumulative financial deficit for the year is AR$2.9 trillion, or 0.5% of GDP. Total revenues during October amounted to AR$9.3 trillion —an inter-annual growth of 167.8% —while primary expenditures amounted to AR$ 8.6 trillion.

Argentine President Javier Milei and United States President-elect Donald Trump met face-to-face on Thursday night, their first encounter following the US elections. According to The Associated Press, Milei is the first foreign leader to meet with Trump in person since his electoral win. All in for TrumpAlthough Milei has always said he would be aligned with the United States no matter what, Donald Trump was clearly his preference to be the next president. Despite the Argentine president’s enthusiasm for a Trump administration, it remains to be seen if his goals of more trade with Washington are a viable option. “Both will be oriented toward industrial policy and nearshoring, something countries neighboring the United States are better positioned to take advantage of than Argentina.”

The draft resolution highlighted the “commitment to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls” in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which President Javier Milei specifically lambasted in his debut General Assembly speech in September. The surprising dissension is the latest in a series of departures from the country’s historical diplomatic stances this week. On Monday, Argentina was the only country to reject the Rights of Indigenous Peoples resolution aimed at preserving their spiritual beliefs, ancestral knowledge, and languages. Former Foreign Minister Diana Mondino was ousted two weeks ago following a UN vote in favor of Cuba. voted in favor of Thursday’s resolution).
