Broke, hungry and just 20, I was too embarrassed to ask for help when I moved to CanadaThis First Person article is written by Diana de Jurei, who lives in Surrey, BC. I couldn’t believe I was at this crossroads: returning to Latvia or becoming homeless in Canada. Compared to his experience in the Soviet Union, Canada seemed a free and safe country, not involved in major geopolitical conflicts. (Submitted by Diana de Jurei)In 2009, when I was 20, I got a Canadian work permit for one year.

And even this assumes Mr. Manning is not in fact the entire “expert panel” – which, as we shall see, is a possibility. Remember, most of the Albertans who respond will have only a rudimentary understanding of the province’s public health legislation, if they have any understanding at all. Many from among the United Conservative Party’s base will have the notion that any kind of organized public health regulatory framework is bad. Even Jason Kenney’s ridiculous “Fair Deal” Panel, of which Mr. Manning was also a member, had more apparent legitimacy than this nonsense. According to the government’s uninformative press release about the panel, Mr. Manning will present a final report with recommendations to the government on Nov. 15.

Several people who work in Ottawa's alcohol industry say drinking attitudes were already changing well before new guidelines around alcohol consumption came out this week. As new recommendations come out suggesting Canadians should dramatically reduce the amount of alcohol they drink, several people in Ottawa's alcohol industry say they've already been seeing a palpable shift toward lower or non-alcoholic beverages. More than seven drinks a week can also increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, the CCSA said. While they can be on the pricier end, Baillie said there are non-alcoholic spirits out there that can be "a bartender's dream tool" for crafting a booze-free drink that's virtually identical to the original. "It's going to allow you to have non-alcoholic martinis at home that have all this robust flavour and quality that we're not necessarily seeing in the mass produced non-alcoholic spirits."

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has asked for an email search this weekend to determine if her staff have been contacting Crown prosecutors and interfering in cases involving the Coutts, Alta., border crossing blockade. Smith made the announcement on her Corus call-in radio show Saturday while also delivering a fifth version of the meetings she has had with Justice officials prosecuting COVID-19 cases. They did not provide us with names, and so I have asked for our independent public service to do a review of emails,” Smith told her radio listeners. The Justice Department has rejected an investigation, noting Smith never spoke directly to Crown prosecutors. She said she also asked prosecutors to consider the cases were failing in court.

Next to preserving and encouraging Canadian unity, the most important job of a Canadian Prime Minister is managing the Canadian-American relationship. And on this date in 1981 Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was preparing to do just that. Canadian officials, along with senior political staff in the PMO, made sure Trudeau was fully briefed before the call began. “If Mr. Reagan does not raise this subject, it would expedite matters if you did,” Trudeau was advised.
