Pension funds improving on climate but overall still falling short: reportTORONTO — A new report by an advocacy group says some of Canada's major pension funds have made significant improvements in responding to the climate crisis, but overall are still falling short. The report by Shift Action for Pension Wealth and Planet Health shows a high level of inconsistency among the 11 pension funds evaluated, and finds they're lacking compared with some international peers. Adam Scott, executive director of Shift, says major pension funds need to do more to safeguard their portfolios against climate-related risk, and to take action to lessen the crisis. He says action by pension funds is important because the retirement plans of millions of Canadians depend on them, and because of the financial sway the funds hold. "A lot of the funds are just coming into this, they're coming to it quite late, frankly," he said.

“We really don’t feel most of the effect of interest rate hikes for 18 months or so,” said Antunes. “There were a lot of people who signed five-year mortgages during the pandemic, before most of the interest rate hikes. “In the areas which they directly impact with interest rates, the Bank is adding to inflation. And the biggest contributor to inflation coming down has been gasoline prices, which has nothing to do with interest rates,” said Macdonald. The Bank of Canada survey found that a majority of Canadians are expecting a “mild to moderate” recession over the next 12 months.

Canada’s Yukon territory lifted its COVID-19 public health emergency declaration on Monday after almost three years. The territory’s health minister said the government will continue to monitor the disease, but that the current health situation allows authorities to manage COVID-19 without emergency measures. “While the lifting of the public health emergency is another step to managing COVID-19 like other communicable diseases, COVID-19 remains a public health concern that we will continue to monitor closely to ensure we are addressing the needs of our communities,” said Tracy-Anne McPhee, Yukon’s minister of Health and Social Services, in a statement on Monday. The public health emergency for COVID-19 was declared on March 18, 2020.
