Kyiv simply can’t afford for the war to become a globally divisive issue—even as Russia works to make it so. To audiences in these countries, Russia portrays its war against Ukraine as a fight with the West, thereby challenging the idea that universal values and rules of law matter. Some hold Ukrainian flags and a giant banner with words in support of Ukraine on it in Portuguese. (The Argentinian Constitution allows its courts, based on universal jurisdiction, to try international crimes, including crimes against humanity and war crimes, irrespective of where they took place.) Talking to the survivors of war crimes left a powerful impression on correspondents from Asia, Latin America, and Africa who came to Ukraine with various interests and priorities.

While the city has discussed using the Olympic marina after the Games — as Paris plans to do with an Olympic pool — the sea is too chilly to swim in during most of the school year. One of France’s soccer greats, Zinedine Zidane, who carried the Olympic torch in the Paris opening ceremony, was born in the most notorious of Marseille’s quartiers nord. SEA, SEA EVERYWHEREThe sea as an entry and a meeting point is engrained in the very DNA of Marseille. “Before it’s a city, Marseille is a port,” said Fabrice Denise, director of the Museum of Marseille History, built next to the Greek archeological site in what is still the city’s center. “You can see Marseille, and the sea, and the horizon, all under her benevolent gaze,” said the basilica’s rector, the Rev.

The national authority for the regulation of cannabis-related activities (ANRAC) offered 3000 this year, for the production, processing, and import of cannabis-related products compared to just 609 last year. The number of farmers who received farming permits rose to 2600 in the provinces of Taounate, Chaouen, Al Hoceima, while 200 permits were delivered to activities relating to industrial processing, marketing, import and export of seeds, ANRAC said. ANRAC has greenlighted the cultivation of the local strain “Beldia”, which has a low thc and requires less water compared to imported seeds. The cultivated area with Beldia was 732, that is 35% of the total areas dedicated to legal cannabis. In April, Morocco reported its first legal export of the substance to Switzerland for medical purposesLast year, Morocco’s legal cannabis harvest stood at 294 tons, the first since the country legalized the cultivation of cannabis for medicine and industry use in 2021.

"The present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty," Macron wrote in a letter made public on Tuesday. France signaled earlier this year that it was open to investing in Moroccan projects in the disputed territory. In a statement, Moroccan King Mohammed VI's Royal Cabinet called France's shift "a significant development." Algeria called Morocco and France "colonial powers, new and old" and announced it would withdraw its ambassador from Paris. Sporadic violence has ensued since the Polisario renewed armed conflict in 2020, ending a 29-year truce.

Four pro-democracy activists were charged in Zimbabwe on Thursday August 1 after being arrested and thrown off a plane the day before planned demonstrating in support of the jailed opposition leader Jameson Timba, their lawyers said. According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the activists “were thrown off a plane by unidentified persons” at Harare airport, on their way to a citizens’ conference in the north-west of the country. Zimbabwe’s opposition has faced a wave of arrests since the disputed August 2023 elections, won by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF. Critics accuse the government of stifling dissent. In total, police have arrested 18 political activists, after warning it would crush opposition protests ahead of its hosting of a summit meeting of the southern African heads of state this month.

In today’s socio-environmental landscape, two imminent threats are converging upon our delicate coastal ecosystems: seawater flooding and plastic pollution. “Coastal ecosystems face a multitude of pressures including plastic pollution and increased flood risk due to sea level rise and the frequency and severity of storms,” noted the study authors. The study signals how two escalating issues – increased plastic use and climate change-induced flooding – can pose a severe combined threat. Solutions for coastal ecosystem preservationThe convergence of plastic pollution and seawater flooding presents a formidable challenge, yet there is a growing consensus on the importance of integrating innovative solutions to mitigate these threats. By fostering awareness of the impacts of plastic pollution and climate change on coastal ecosystems, we empower individuals to contribute to sustainable practices.

Rising property taxes, often fueled by rising home values, have frustrated people across the U.S. North Dakota’s initiative qualified for the ballot as Nebraska legislators were poring over more than 100 proposals to ease ballooning property taxes, with a debate on a plan next week. Kansas legislators approved a small property tax cut this year and said property owners want bigger reductions. The campaign in North Dakota is happening as the state is experiencing good finances, especially strong oil and sales taxes. Regardless of the election outcome, property tax issues loom large for the 2025 session, Vigesaa said. Last year, the Republican-led Legislature passed a package of income tax cuts and property tax credits estimated at $515 million.

Florida’s Big Bend coast may be battered by a hurricane early on Monday as a storm currently over Cuba gathers strength while moving across the Gulf of Mexico. While the official outlook calls for wind speeds to peak just below hurricane strength, forecast models “indicate some potential for the system to reach hurricane strength before it makes landfall,” Brad Reinhart, a senior hurricane specialist at the US National Hurricane Center, wrote in a forecast. Hurricane watches have been posted for the region for the storm that will likely be called Debby. It’s forecast to move into the Gulf where warm waters will allow it to build. Rinde said AccuWeather believes Debby may reach Category 1 strength on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale when it made landfall about 6 a.m. Monday in Florida.
