CAIRO, Aug 6 (Reuters) – Egypt’s state grains buyer, the General Authority for Supply Commodities, announced on Tuesday a massive tender for 3.8 million metric tons of wheat to cover imports between October 2024 and April 2025, its largest ever according to traders. Egypt has been one of the world’s largest wheat importers, mainly to provide subsidised bread for tens of millions of its people. GASC alone imports some 5.5 million metric tons of wheat annually for bread subsidies.

Li Changlin, China's ambassador to Morocco, claims his country's investment in the North African nation's EV and new energy sectors has "exploded." The Tangier tech hub, another project, will host hundreds of Chinese companies. In addition to bypassing duties, setting up manufacturing facilities in Morocco offers Chinese companies another benefit: tax breaks. Morocco's free-trade deal with the EU allows Chinese companies to bypass tariffs from the trade bloc. It aims to become a key player in global battery minerals production and processing transformation, with major EV battery plants already announced.

Heavy rains have triggered building collapses that have killed 17 people in northern Sudan, as the country reels from almost 16 months of fighting between rival security forces, a medic told AFP on Tuesday. About 11,500 homes have collapsed, the state's infrastructure minister Samir Saad told reporters Tuesday, and at least 170 people have been injured. Each year in August, peak flow on the Nile River is accompanied by torrential rains, destroying homes, wrecking infrastructure and claiming lives, both directly and indirectly through water-borne diseases. Last week, a flash flood caused the deaths of five people in Port Sudan, on the Red Sea coast. Since July 7, torrential rains and flooding have killed more than 30 people across the country, Sudan's federal emergency operations center said Tuesday.

Finland became the latest country and the first Nordic country to formally support the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty as a solution to the Sahara conflict. Finland’s new position is a state position, involving all spheres of the state, within the executive and legislative branches. Finland’s support for the autonomy plan is part of an international momentum in favor of a solution to the Sahara conflict within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty. It is also part of the momentum within the European Union, Finland becoming the 17th EU member state to support autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty. In the joint statement, Finland also stressed that as a stable country, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has reinforced its position as a key regional player.

TUNIS, Tunisia — A potential presidential candidate in Tunisia has been sentenced to two years in prison, marking another setback to the country’s fledgling opposition challenging President Kais Saied as he seeks a new term. Following a complaint by the North African nation’s election authority, she was found guilty of violating a controversial anti-fake news decree outlawing spreading information that slanders or harms others. Moussi’s lawyer Nafaa Laribi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she still intends to run in the Oct. 6 presidential election, and that, unlike other candidates, nothing in Monday’s sentence prevents her from running. The sentence is the latest in a growing crackdown that observers have said is politically motivated against Saied’s critics, regardless of political affiliation. With Moussi and other leading opposition figures in prison, Saied is expected to face little election competition in what was once the Middle East and North Africa’s most progressive democracy.

A passing Maltese-flagged cargo ship found the boat 112 nautical miles southwest of the town of Pylos in the early hours of Tuesday, the coast guard said. Many attempt to make the short crossing from the Turkish coast to nearby eastern Greek islands in small dinghies. The Greek coast guard came under intense criticism for its actions concerning the Adriana, which had been sailing in international waters but within Greece’s area of responsibility for search and rescue operations. A coast guard patrol boat and several merchant ships had been shadowing the Adriana for hours when it sank, but were unable to evacuate the passengers and prevent the massive loss of life. Survivors have said the Adriana went down during a botched coast guard attempt to tow it, which Greek officials strongly deny.

Fitch Ratings has lowered Kenya’s credit rating from “B” to “B-”, pointing to increased risks to the nation’s finances after the government retracted planned tax measures due to public protests. The Kenyan government, yielding to demonstrators, scrapped a tax proposal intended to generate an additional $2.7 billion in revenue, a move initially advised by the IMF to correct fiscal disparities. Fitch warns of the ongoing threat of social unrest, which could hinder efforts to stabilize the economy. Kenya faces hurdles in obtaining foreign loans, exacerbated by high interest rates and diminished foreign reserves. Moody’s had previously reduced Kenya’s rating, and S&P is expected to announce its decision on August 23.

MOU 225-07-7001, which outlines the two organizations’ responsibilities for defining animal feed ingredients, has been in place for 17 years. “AAFCO believes that its ingredient definition process has been a shining example of successful collaboration and partnership between states and the federal government,” said Austin Therrell, executive director of AAFCO. AAFCO investigators require roughly 30 days to prepare ingredient definition requests for the FDA, so AAFCO will stop accepting requests on September 1 in order to submit all definition requests prior to the October 1 expiration. AAFCO and the FDA are independently working on plans that will provide a seamless transition and continue to support the U.S. animal food industry. The FDA is also evaluating its animal food ingredient review authorities and processes to determine if changes are needed to better serve public health and ensure new ingredients have a predictable path to market.

His success story reflects the innovative spirit prevalent among the youth in the Middle East and North Africa—and his startup is already showing significant growth. Radhi’s achievements are emblematic of a broader demographic shift sweeping across the Middle East and North Africa, known as MENA. This period of high fertility, coupled with improved child survival rates, resulted in a substantial youth population by the turn of the century. According to the International Labor Organization, the youth unemployment rate in the region is projected to be 25.5% in 2024, more than three times higher than the adult unemployment rate, and significantly above the global youth unemployment rate. This led to a compound effect: a large number of potential parents coupled with a higher fertility rate.
