Mali’s northern Tuareg rebels say they killed at least 84 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers over days of fierce fighting in the north of the West African country in what appears to be Wagner’s heaviest defeat since it stepped in two years ago to help Mali’s military authorities fight insurgent groups. GUR spokesperson Andriy Yusov has not confirmed Kyiv’s involvement in the fighting, but in comments published on public broadcaster Suspilne’s website on Monday, July 29, he said the Malian rebels had received the “necessary” information to conduct the attack.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea marked the delivery of 250 nuclear-capable missile launchers to frontline military units at a ceremony where leader Kim Jong Un called for a ceaseless expansion of his military’s nuclear program to counter perceived U.S. threats, state media said Monday. Kim said at Sunday’s event in Pyongyang the new launchers would give his frontline units “overwhelming” firepower over South Korea and make the operation of tactical nuclear weapons more practical and efficient. North Korea has been expanding its lineup of mobile short-range weapons designed to overwhelm missile defenses in South Korea, while also pursuing intercontinental ballistic missiles designed to reach the U.S. mainland. North Korea also could seek to dial up tensions in a U.S. election year, experts say. Russia has offered flood aid to North Korea, in another sign of expanding relations between the two nations.

It is almost every South African footballer’s dream to ply their trade abroad, whether in Europe or North America. However, not every player will reach the level where clubs abroad are clamouring for their signature. In other cases, the player is more than good enough to make it abroad, but the stars just don’t align, and a move never materialises. Those who do get to make it, especially at an early age, are expected to reach the highest of highs. Mamelodi Sundowns’ Themba Zwane recently revealed that he was ‘surprised’ by teammate Kobamelo Kodisang’s return to the Premier Soccer League.

KANO, Nigeria — In this northern city, the second most populous in Nigeria, protesters have been converging at the city center and making their way to Government House, seat of the state governor. While protests are not unusual in Nigeria, it’s less common in the predominantly Muslim north outside of university campuses. Now this level of the protests and sheer numbers of protesters in the big cities of northern Nigeria have caught onlookers, participants, and authorities off guard. Even though the “End bad governance” protests have been nationwide, the 13 people killed as of Saturday Aug. 3 were in three northern states, according to Amnesty International. Curfews have been imposed in Kano and other northern states including Jigawa, Katsina and Borno.

North Korea performs diplomatic gymnastics in Olympic comebackReuters An Chang-ok gave fleeting waves and smiles for the cameras on SaturdayAs the Paris gymnastics arena roared on American Simone Biles for her third gold medal of the 2024 Olympics, one of those applauding was none other than An Chang-ok, a rival from North Korea. Saturday’s women’s vault final saw the North share a stage with its foes South Korea and the US. This new generation of North Korean athletes have claimed two silvers in Paris, and occasionally surprised sport commentators who did not know what to expect from them. The age-old North Korean art of “sports diplomacy” involved limited participation in a global forum to prove the country was normal, Prof Pacheco Pardo said. Athletes were some of the “few actors that North Korea has who won’t be viewed suspiciously” by the world, he explained.

Nigerian police used tear gas and mulls calling in the army for help as violent protests over worsening economic conditions grip the country. The police used tear gas and gunshots to disperse the crowds in many cities, where protesters took to the street to voice their anger over inflation and bad governance. Amnesty International said on Friday at least 13 protesters in total had been killed in three northern states, but the authorities have not commented on any deaths. Dubbed “day of rage,” the protests emulate similar unrest in Kenya over high taxes. However, in many instances, Nigeria’s protests turned into looting, with three states at least declaring curfews.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered condolences to North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un over devastating floods that caused untold casualties and damaged thousands of homes, the Kremlin said on Saturday. Kim thanked Putin for the outreach but said "already-established plans as state measures were taken at the present stage." Pyongyang said on Wednesday that officials who neglected their disaster prevention duties had caused unspecified casualties, without providing details on the location. North Korea and Russia have been allies since the North's founding after World War II and have drawn even closer since Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. North Korea is accused of breaching arms control measures by supplying weapons to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine.

This year, the Atlantic hurricane season has been far calmer than usual, and it is all because of sand. Fine grains from the Sahara have been so abundant in the air that they have affected the formation of hurricanes. The Sahara Air Layer consists of sand and dust particles from North Africa that the winds throw up into the atmosphere. Dry, dusty air stops hurricanes from formingThe dust and sand make the air up high warmer and incredibly dry. This layer of warm air sits over a lower layer of cool air and keeps the tall clouds that lead to hurricanes from forming.

Mauritanian re-elected president Ould Ghazouani gave Algeria’s proxy and chief of the Polisario separatist front, Brahim Ghali, an indifferent and ultra-quick hand flutter and rejected to pose for a photo with him as he did with all the guests attending his inauguration. The gesture indicates that Mauritania had acted under its bully neighbor Algeria which sent the Polisario chief on board of an Algerian presidential airplane. The moment was captured on camera showing an apathetic encounter and a humiliated Ghali. Mauritania, under Ghazouani, has adopted a neutral stand maintaining good ties with its first African trading partner Morocco, while trying to not cede too much to a military-dominated Algeria. The African Union has recently dealt a painful blow to Algeria and the Polisario in deciding that only UN-member states can participate in meetings involving the Union and its global partners.
