In their latest Africa Energy Review 2023, PwC looks at the challenges and opportunities inherent in the continent’s energy sector, positing that Africa is now emerging as a key enabler to the global energy transition. It requires a multipronged approach to decarbonisation with renewables and natural gas power at its core. It says the continent has significant renewable energy potential, particularly in the North and South, from which to develop renewable energy and become more energy secure in a sustainable net-zero manner. Image Source: PwC’s Africa Energy Review 2023. East African energy expansion is mostly driven by gas development and LNG export, with Tanzania and Mozambique’s gas potential starting to bear fruit.

[1/6] A rocket carrying a spy satellite Malligyong-1 is prepared to be launched, as North Korean government claims, in a location given as North Gyeongsang Province, North Korea in this handout picture obtained by Reuters on November 21, 2023. The suspension of a clause in the agreement will see South Korea step up military surveillance along the heavily fortified border with North Korea. U.S.-led efforts to boost U.N. sanctions on North Korea have failed in recent years due to opposition from veto-wielding China and Russia. Critics have said the pact weakened Seoul's ability to monitor North Korea while Pyongyang had violated the agreement. North Korea had notified Japan of a satellite launch after two failed attempts to put what it called spy satellites into orbit this year.

Yet, climate finance going to small-scale agrifood systems has gone down by 44 percent and is now as low as 0.8 percent of total climate finance, falling far short of needs. Small-scale farmers, who feed entire communities and nations in the developing world, need to be able to adapt to climate change now. Small-scale farmers are often on the climate frontlines, living in vulnerable areas, and exposed to extreme weather events. Yet, according to the new analysis, “The Climate Finance Gap for Small Scale Agrifood Systems”, climate finance to small-scale agrifood systems (which include small-scale famers, farmers organizations, cooperative and also micro-, small rural agribusinesses serving them), is strikingly low, falling to US$5.53 billion, representing less than 0.8% of global climate finance in 2019/2020. This is extremely disturbing as solutions to help small-scale farmers to adapt do exist,” said Lario.

North Korea has said it successfully launched a military spy satellite on its third attempt in six months. North Korea’s neighbours and their allies are taking a cautious approach to its purported success this time. To launch a more capable satellite, North Korea will probably need to develop a larger rocket, which it appears to be doing, he said. “This is not the first time North Korea has shown its competition with South Korea. North Korea’s first yet failed satellite launch came six days after South Korea successfully launched its homegrown Nuri rocket,” it said.

The death toll from Israel’s subsequent assault on Gaza continues to mount, at last count exceeding 12,000, at least 5,000 of them children. An idea that has gained greater traction in Western countries, including the United States, would see the Palestinian Authority replace Hamas in Gaza. Hamas has been the government of Gaza since 2006, has a presence throughout major institutions and civil society, and enjoys significant public support. REOCCUPIED TERRITORYIf the leadership vacuum in Gaza cannot be filled by an Arab state or a Palestinian actor, what then? Some observers take the worst-case scenario—driving Palestinians out of Gaza and embarking on an Israeli reoccupation—a step further.

Although the crop is about 20% smaller than anticipated, Tru-Cape’s cherry producers are thrilled about the quality and size of these ruby red jewels. “It’s some of the best quality cherries we’ve ever seen,” says Calla du Toit, Tru-Cape’s procurement manager enthusiastically. A cold spell and frost in mid-September hit some cherry producers particularly hard. Nico cautions that due to the short harvest and marketing window (only about ten weeks), cherry production demands focused farming practices, access to proper packing facilities and good market access. Analysis: After demonstrating that their advanced missile and drone technology can reach Israel, the Houthis have expanded their focus to the Red Sea. After threatening to strike Israel and American assets in response to the Gaza offensive, the Houthis vowed last week to target Israeli ships in the Red Sea. This is despite the US backing and selling arms to the Saudi-led coalition, with the hope of maintaining security in the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula. This handout screen grab captured from a video shows Yemen's Houthi fighters taking over the Galaxy Leader Cargo in the Red Sea coast off Hodeida, on 20 November 2023 in the Red Sea, Yemen. For now, Yemen’s war has reached a stalemate and violence has mostly lulled after UN-brokered ceasefires and efforts to achieve a new government.
