Africa’s ed-tech sector has unlimited potential, with a great number of startups innovating in different areas, yet ultimately a lack of funding in a sector that still has a reputation for “impact” over “profit” may hold it back. And as elsewhere, and as in other tech-based industries, the ed-tech space received a real boost from the enforced digitisation that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. The total amount of funding does notoriously fluctuate each year, yet clearly African ed-tech startups are not getting enough. In episode three, we’re digging into the funding and support ecosystem that is helping ed-tech startups scale, and whether more needs to be done to help the space fulfil its potential. In episode one, we’re digging into the scope of Africa’s educational challenges, and how ed-tech startups are working to address them.

Algeria’s boycott of all Moroccan ports has backfired as the country backpedals by excluding fresh produce and meat from the decision. Last month, Algeria asked its banks to stop financing any import operation of goods transiting through Moroccan ports. Tanger Med has become a key hub for the shipping industry requiring deep water ports. The decision is part of desperate economic warfare tactics staged by Algeria since the duo Chengriiha-Tebboune took power in Algiers. Trade between Morocco and Algeria is already at a very derisory level and the Algerian decision will only have a very minimal impact on Tanger Med port, which prepares for yet another expansion taking advantage of its strategic location.

In recent times, the world has been gripped by a crisis unfolding in the Red Sea, where relentless missile attacks continue unabated. The crisis has far-reaching consequences and its impact is acutely felt by nations relying on the Red Sea trade route. India’s exports through the Red Sea valued at Rs18 trillion ($217 billion) and imports from these regions, worth Rs17 trillion ($205 billion), have been significantly impacted. Exporters are facing difficulties finding ships willing to take the Red Sea route, leading to substantial losses.
