Tunisia doubles down on countering Morocco’s territorial integrity – The North Africa Post
The incident is a continuation of Tunisian provocation of Moroccan diplomacy after autocratic president Kais Saied gave a state reception to Polisario chief during a Japan-Africa summit in 2022. In response to this offense to bilateral ties, Morocco protested to Tunisia and recalled its ambassador. After backtracking on his country’s democratic achievements, autocratic president kais Saied has succeeded in making his country a vassal serving Algeria’s military rulers. Tunis is now siding with an irrational Algerian military regime serving a hegemonic agenda that has only simmered instability in north Africa as well as the Sahel, including through manipulating terrorism that ironically also hit Tunisia’s tourism-dependent economy. Algeria has given 300 million dollars to Tunisia in exchange for its unconditional support in international fora.

Morocco was represented at this meeting, held under the theme “Combating Terrorism: A Shared Responsibility”, by Minister in charge of the National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi. The defense ministers emphasized their countries’ determination to enhance cooperation, coordinate efforts, and unite them to avert terrorism risks. The defense ministers reviewed the alliance’s 2023 annual report and its operational and financial performance report. The defense ministers were briefed on the Coalition’s methodology and the initiatives it encompasses, designed according to the needs of the member states. In addition to three partner countries, the Islamic Military Coalition for the Fight against Terrorism has 42 member states working collectively to launch initiatives covering its areas of action.

New Grammy category for African music ignores almost all of Africa
The 2024 Grammy awards will see the introduction of a new category: "best African music performance." They're all based in cities and hail from either Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy, or South Africa, the continent's third largest economy. "The award is just the West's vision of what world music or global music should be," says Mathlouthi. Music from northern Africa, where Mathlouthi is from, has historically been shut out of past Grammy global categories. "African music is not one style.

NATO — the enduring alliance
Nations led by the United States and Britain signed the NATO treaty in Washington D.C. in April 1949. NATO today has a range of missions including but going beyond self-defense narrowly defined. Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that an attack on one member nation is an attack on all. Today, NATO performs roughly the same strategic role. Britain’s sustained support for NATO, and special rapport with the United States, provide interesting leadership opportunities.

Suez Canal’s revenues fall to $428mln in January
The Suez Canal’s revenues dropped 46.7% year on year (YoY) to $428 million in January, the canal authority's Chairman Osama Rabie told Kol Youm talk show on February 3rd. This was attributed to the decrease in the number of vessels passing through the canal to 1,362 last month from 2,155 ships in January 2023, Rabie highlighted. On a related note, the French shipping group CMA CGM has suspended its Red Sea transits until further notice over security concerns, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the matter. Mozambique: African Development Bank lends $40 million to the Mozambique Rail and Port Authority to buy rolling stock for the Ressano Garcia railway line

North Korean Eyelashes Sold Globally as China-Made, Reuters Says
North Korean beauty products such as false eyelashes and wigs are being sold around the world as “Made in China,” aiding a recovery in its economy, Reuters reported. China-based firms are importing semi-finished products from North Korea, completing and packaging them before selling them to markets including the West, Japan and South Korea as “Made in China,” Reuters said, citing interviews with people from the eyelash industry, trade lawyers and North Korean economy experts. The process helps North Korea bypass international trade sanctions.

Northern Ireland gets its first Sinn Fein first minister in historic shift
But there is no doubt that the political landscape of Northern Ireland is changing. But many people suspected they also didn’t want to accept Sinn Fein playing a more dominant role. And so, for 730 days, there wasn’t a functioning government at the Stormont Estate, the seat of power in Northern Ireland. He was also the first member of Sinn Fein to serve as lord mayor of Belfast, from 2002 to 2003. Maskey said he still hopes to someday live in a united Ireland.
