North Korea’s Kim declares ‘full support’ for Russian war in Ukraine
Shunned by the West over his invasion of Ukraine, Putin is seeking partners who share his anti-Western stance, including China, Iran and North Korea. His remarks — supporting North Korea’s rights to “take justified measures” to ensure its national security — will inevitably increase Western fears of new Russian military and technological support for North Korea. The reason: To sustain his war on Ukraine, he needs North Korea’s help. In turn, North Korea promised “full support and solidarity for the Russian government, army and people” in the war in Ukraine, state media agencies reported. For decades after the founding of North Korea in 1945, the Soviet Union served as its main economic and security benefactor.

CWD continues to spread across North America
Chase D’Animulls/stock.adobe.comChronic waste disease (CWD) has been detected in free-ranging cervids in 24 states and 4 provinces as well as in captive cervid facilities in 19 states and 3 provinces. The most recent detection was announced by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that CWD has been detected within deer and elk in the state. According to Richards, some states are taking on a more of a monitoring stance and that alone will not alter the outcomes of the disease. Current researchAs the CWD cases continue to rise, researchers are investigating if it is possible to be transmissible to humans. Scientists are expecting the study to take many years before determining what the risks, if any, CWD has to humans since it takes a long time for symptoms of CWD to appear.1Reference

EU Pledges $507MM for Europe-Africa Grid Interconnector
European investment in the project started with a EUR 307.6 million ($330.2 million) grant from the Connecting Europe Facility approved December 2022. The EU later that month approved a EUR 27 million ($29 million) grant under the Neighborhood Investment Platform for the project’s critical infrastructure components in Tunisia. The German bank has invested EUR 13 million ($14 million) for this component, adding to EUR 10 million ($10.7 million) from the EU. For the social and environmental studies component, which is implemented by the EBRD, the EU has invested EUR 5 million ($5.4 million). “Tunisia's solar energy potential is enormous”, Marcus Cornaro, head of the EU delegation in Tunisia, said of the investments.

How the Global South told the North to stop lecturing it on climate
Increasingly, voices from the Global South are pushing back against the “hypocrisy” of the Global North, which got rich in an industrialized world powered by fossil fuels and continues to profit from and drive their extraction. Of course, the Global South is a diverse place, and its positions reflect that. Still, Europe and North America continue to produce emissions that outstrip the share of their populations, while most Global South nations have a fraction of their climate footprints. Global South countries are paying five times more on debt payments than on addressing the climate crisis, according to a report by 35 aid organizations called The Debt–Fossil Fuel Trap. “The question is the right to development.”Most of the Global South, excluding China, is not as developed as the North, and its carbon footprint reflects that.
