Algeria’s president Abdelmadjid Tebboune was invited to the latest G7 summit held in Italy due to the pressure exerted by French President Emmanuel Macron, says a London-based think-tank in its latest report. If, as expected, French party Rassemblement National (RN) wins upcoming snap parliamentary elections and takes control of the government, it will almost certainly recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, affirms Menas Associates, which provides intelligence to decision-makers. Teboune’s last-minute invitation to attend the G7 summit, which was celebrated by Algerian-state media as a diplomatic achievement, was arranged by President Macron following the results of the European Parliament elections on June 9, says the British think-tank. The upcoming elections are likely to have serious consequences for French-Algerian relations and the remaining three years of Macron’s presidency. On the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, Tebboune met Macron.

Jihadi fighters who had long operated in Africa’s volatile Sahel region have settled in northwestern Nigeria after crossing from neighboring Benin, according to a new report, the latest trend in the militants’ movements to wealthier West African coastal nations. They say the park and most protected wildlife areas in Nigeria are poorly patrolled, making them easy targets for armed groups. The Clingendael report said it is unclear what the motive of the Sahel extremists in the park is and what their relationship with other armed groups there will be. AdvertisementAcross many villages in Nigeria’s northwest, banditry — not jihadi fighters — remains the major security threat, Barnett said. The bandits have on a few occasions in the past collaborated with jihadi fighters as two separate groups in carrying out attacks.

It’s over!”The asylum-seekers finally emerged from the sea defeated, but there was no doubt that they would try to reach the U.K. again. Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants were pushing them north. While the U.K. government has been hostile, too, many migrants have family or friends in the U.K. and a perception they will have more opportunities there. At least 20 people have died so far this year trying to reach the U.K., according to Utopia 56. In late April, five people died, including a 7-year-old girl who was crushed inside a rubber boat after more than 110 people boarded it frantically trying to escape police.

Morocco rejected the foreign interferences in the domestic affairs of Sahel countries, which do not need a tutor in managing their internal issues. The remark was made by foreign minister Nasser Bourita following talks in Rabat with his Burkinabe peer Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. “With their men and skills, Sahel countries are capable of settling their own issues,” Bourita said. Democratic transition is necessary and it is up to the elites of the Sahel countries to find their way through, he said. Morocco’s policy is that of « supporting” instead of “substitution,” he said, noting that Sahel countries are well-placed to solve their own problems.
