First group of Vietnam's Engineering Unit Rotation 1 deployed to Abyei

(Photo: VNA)The first group of Vietnam's Engineering Unit Rotation 1 arrived at the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) on May 5, according to the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.The 28-member group was led by Colonel Mac Duc Trong, deputy head of the department, head of the Engineering Unit Rotation 1 and commander of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at UNISFA.The officers and soldiers left for the UN peacekeeping mission on May 3. They have been assigned to take over barracks in the mission and equipment transported from Vietnam via the sea route, and make preparations to welcome the official unit of 156 people, to be deployed in mid-May.This is the first time Vietnam has sent military engineers to join UN peacekeeping operations. It is the unit-level formation with the largest number of members ever participating in UN peacekeeping missions.The staff members of the Engineering Unit Rotation 1, which debuted on November 17, 2011, will help provide humanitarian assistance and support the UN delegations in keeping and re-establishing peace in the area.They will also ensure transport, perform road maintenance, help reconstruct the UN base, and provide support for the local community by building community houses, schools, and other public facilities.Taking into account the latest deployment, Vietnam’s military has sent a total of 76 officers on individual duties, and 436 soldiers in groups on UN peacekeeping missions./.

German newspaper highlights Vietnam’s post-pandemic economic recovery

However, the Southeast Asian nation has fully opened and shifted to living safely with the pandemic despite Omicron waves this year.The country’s export-import value hit a record 67.37 billion USD in March, of which 34.71 billion USD came from exports, surpassing the previous record in July 2021.The article cited a forecast by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as saying that Vietnam’s economy will expand about 6.5 percent this year.It also highlighted Vietnam’s export of electronic products, especially mobile phones, garments-textiles and timber products.Tim Lee Lahaphan, an economist from Standard Chartered Bank, said more and more foreign firms have planned to move their supply chains to Vietnam that is dubbed as a centre of electronics, garments-textile and footwear in the region, the article noted.Apart from production and trade, the domestic tourism is also bouncing back, the article said, adding that since mid-March, Vietnam announced its complete resumption of tourism activities.Tourism has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s economy, making up 9.2 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP) last year, the article said./.

Nearly 120 million USD to be used to build 4 aircraft maintenance workshops at Long Thanh airport

An aircraft maintenance workshop - Illustrative image (Photo: VNA)– The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has recently submitted to the Ministry of Transport for appraisal and approval four investment projects on building and operating aircraft maintenance workshops at Long Thanh International Airport with a total investment of more than 2.75 trillion VND (119.7 million USD).The facilities all meet the standards of the CAAV, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).Each project is expected to be constructed within 24 months from the effective date of the project contract, and the estimated operation time is 25 years from the date of completion of the project.Located 40km to the east of Ho Chi Minh City, Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai province is expected to relieve overloading at the southern metropolis’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which is currently the largest in Vietnam.Covering more than 5,580 hectares, it will spread across six communes in Long Thanh district. Its construction has been divided into three phases.In the first phase, a runway and one passenger terminal along with other supporting facilities will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year. This phase is scheduled to be completed in 2025.The project started in 2021. Once fully completed by 2050, the airport will be able to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo annually./.
