US Secretary of State sends greetings to Vietnam on 77th National Day

– US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, on behalf of the US government, on Sept. 1 (Hanoi time) sent greetings to the Vietnamese government and people on the occasion of Vietnam’s 77th National Day (Sept. 2).A release from the US State Department said the Secretary highlighted the achievements the US and Vietnam have jointly recorded over the past in accelerating the common priorities on regional security, prosperity, climate change fight, global health challenge settlement and intensifying relations and exchanges between the two peoples.The Secretary affirmed the bilateral friendship on the basis of the US support to a strong, prosperous and independent Vietnam, as well as long-term commitments by the two sides in settling war consequences and humanitarian issues. He expressed his hope for continued cooperation with the Vietnamese government and people to bring about prosperity, peace and stability for both countries and the Indo-Pacific region.Earlier, within the framework of the US-Vietnam Dialogue in Asia-Pacific held in Washington D.C. on August 30, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink and Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu exchanged ideas on issues related to the two countries’ common concern in pushing up peace, stability and prosperity in the region.According to the office of the State Department’s Spokesperson, the two sides affirmed the importance of the continuation of high-level exchanges between the two countries, as well as the marking of the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership which will come next year./.

HCM City, Cuba push for further cooperation in multiple areas

(Photo: VNA)Nguyen Van Hieu, Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, has suggested the Cuban Party and State to further push for cooperation and delegation exchange with the Vietnamese city in areas of mutual interest, including youth exchange, healthcare, biology and education.He made the statement while hosting a reception for Gerardo Peñalver Portal First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba on August 31.Describing Portal’s visit as a practical move to beef up the long-standing relations between the two countries, Hieu said HCM City welcomes all high-level delegations from Cuba to step up ties between the two sides, particularly in economy.He thanked the Party, State and people of Cuba for supporting Vietnam, including HCM City, in the COVID-19 fight and post-pandemic recovery though the Caribbean country has been enduring many hardships itself.Portal, for his part, expressed his delight at progress in economic cooperation, especially trade and investment, between the two nations, saying enterprises from HCM City have invested in Cuba, contributing to its socio-economic development.Highly valuing HCM City’s potential, he said Cuba wants to further boost partnership with the city in multiple fields, including trade, investment, medicine, healthcare, education, pharmaceutical production and cultural exchange. Cuba has planned various high-level delegation visits to intensify ties with Vietnam in politics and economy, he said, noting that they are expected to develop the friendship between the two Parties, States and peoples more strongly.Hieu took the occasion to hand over the Cuban official a cash donation worth 250,000 USD from the city's Party, authorities and people, aiming to help Cuba address aftermath of the severe oil deport fire in Matanzas province./.

Non-stop toll collection proposed for airports

(Photo: VNA)- The Ministry of Transport has requested the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to promptly study the investment and operation of non-stop toll collection using camera recognition technology at airports.All toll booths on highways nationwide have already switched to automated non-stop toll collection since August 1.If the plan is realised, vehicles entering and leaving the airport will be similarly identified via camera recognition.The ministry also proposed the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises direct the ACV in equipping camera systems at the airport frontage; and coordinate with local authorities to strengthen the inspection, supervision and handling of administrative violations to ensure implementation of regulations on vehicles at airports.The ACV was urged to direct Tan Son Nhat International Airport in researching additional signboards, information counters at the pick-up and drop-off terminals, strengthening the information and communications counter, and helping passengers choose suitable transport.To overcome delays, flight cancellations and passenger congestion in security screening areas, the Ministry of Transport requested the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to assume responsibility in coordinating with agencies to establish an inspection group at airport screening areas.They will also focus on improving areas such as the coordination and management of flight slots and allocation of night flights according to airport capacity.The ACV will research and invest in upgrading equipment, ensuring and increasing screening services and aviation security checks for passengers in a quick and efficient procedure.The Ministry of Transport has also requested ground service enterprises to review their operations following an assessment report that demonstrated an unresolved demand for more baggage clearance.It should improve the current process and solve the problem of delayed baggage during busy periods such as the upcoming national holiday and during the Lunar New Year.

Revolutionary changes proposed to draft Gender Affirmation Law

(Photo UN Women Vietnam)- Medical interventions are now non-obligatory for people who want to be recognised as transgender, and trans men are eligible for maternity leave should they be pregnant.These amendments were proposed to the draft Gender Affirmation Law and were discussed during the Policy Dialogue on International Experiences & Consultation on the Draft Gender Affirmation Law organised in Hanoi last week.Eighty representatives from the National Assembly, Ministries, NGOs and UN organisations gave their recommendations for the Gender Affirmation Law, which was drafted in June and is being amended by the Ministry of Health to present to the National Assembly Standing Committee this year. "Although Vietnam made progress in ending LGBTQ discrimination, especially for transgender people, when the right to change sex was recognised in 2015, the affirmation and recognition of transgender people are currently not applicable in reality. For example, men with uteruses or vaginas.This led many Vietnamese transgender people to go abroad or to illegal medical facilities to implement sex change surgery. They are not obligated to be sterilised in genital operations unless they want to.Transgender people, according to the draft, should also be able to marry their new gender after recognition.
