Biden Pressures Israel On Gaza Aid Amid Rising Conflict US threatens military support cut if humanitarian access to Gaza does not improveUS-Israel relations have come to the forefront as the conflict in Gaza intensifies, triggering actions from the Biden administration aimed at addressing the humanitarian aid situation. Recently, the pressure has escalated: the United States issued strict warnings to Israel about its humanitarian aid policies or face potential cutbacks on military assistance. According to the letter, Israel has 30 days to improve the flow of humanitarian aid, especially as the situation on the ground deteriorates, with severe food and medical shortages reported. The leaked letter revealed deep dissatisfaction within the Biden administration about Israel's failure to maintain earlier promises about humanitarian access to Gaza. The complexity of this geopolitical situation highlights the dual pressures facing both the Biden administration and Israeli policymakers.

The number of U.S. service members and veterans who radicalize make up a tiny fraction of a percentage point of the millions and millions who have honorably served their countryTakeaways from The Associated Press' reporting on extremism in the militaryAn Associated Press investigation examined extremism among members of the U.S. military and veterans. Extremist plots involving people with military backgrounds were more likely to involve weapons training or firearms than those plots that didn't include someone with a military background, according to an AP analysis of the data. However, the participation of active-duty military and veterans gave extremist plots more potential for mass injury or death, according to the data. The Pentagon did develop at least one way to detect extremist incidents across military branches and among civilian defense contractors. ___The Associated Press receives support from several private foundations to enhance its explanatory coverage of elections and democracy.

The surprise is that nothing surprising has happened — except in the Mideast, where fresh assaults are likely. A big surprise, in second place, is that Harris can’t get traction with Black voters. THE BIGGEST OCTOBER SURPRISE is the intensity and implications of the Gaza war, which is likely to become even more disruptive in the coming days. THE WAR’S SPREAD has alarmed the Harris campaign, which sees the images of dead civilians as complicating her path to victory in key swing states with sizable Arab American and Muslim populations. A MASSIVE ISRAELI STRIKE IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS, WHICH IS LIKELY, will burden the Harris campaign with still another issue that could damage her candidacy.

McKinsey is overhauling its China business after cutting back on government-linked clients and reducing the unit’s workforce by nearly 500 people, about a third of the total. Joe Ngai, the head of McKinsey’s China business, said the company’s employee-attrition rate in the country has been at its historic average of around 20%, but it has slowed hiring. Its latest strategy calls for helping multinational companies navigate China’s changes, advising Chinese companies that want to expand overseas and working with Chinese companies going through executive transitions, said Ngai. These have included China Construction Bank and China Telecom, which McKinsey advised on digitization and operation management projects. Last year, foreign consulting firms’ revenue in China fell 6.3% while local consultants increased revenue slightly, according to Chinese consulting market-research firm Shensixing.

While other educational institutions pulled back on their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the University of Michigan doubled down, spending nearly $250 million since 2016 on employees and programming that fill this ever-expanding niche. Some 241 employees of the university work in DEI offices or have one of those key words—diversity, equity, or inclusion—in their job titles, according to the American Enterprise Institute's Mark Perry. Each and every university department, unit, and office must have a DEI action plan. This constitutes perhaps the largest DEI bureaucracy of any public university, according to an exhaustive review by The New York Times. Indeed, The Times finds that race and gender-based grievances have actually increased, with students filing more complaints than ever before.
