(https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/20/us/politics/mike-johnson-transgender-women-ban-capitol-bathrooms.html("Johnson Says He Will Bar Transgender Women from Public Bathrooms")Republicans do love their potty talk. The bathroom seems to hold an enormous fascination for right wingers. They can't get enough of using it as the visual centerpiece of their attack on transgender persons. Sarah McBride deserves none of this scrutiny, of this enmity. To do what no other transgender person has done, to overcome the obstacles and become the first to be elected to Congress is an accomplishment that should be greatly applauded, not sullied by potty talk.

For a normal administration, Linda McMahon would be an unusual pick for Education secretary. McMahon rose to fame as CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which she co-founded with her husband, Vince McMahon. And critics of current Education Secretary Miguel Cardona say his extensive experience in the field has not translated to success. “I think it’s disappointing that President Trump sees the Department of Education as a consolation prize,” said Michael Petrilli, president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. But one of the biggest changes Trump is pushing for is no Education Department at all.

Meanwhile, two high school teachers, one in Chino and one in Cerritos, are under investigation for angry outbursts in response to students wearing MAGA gear in class. Talking politics is welcomed at Cerritos High School within certain parameters, according to a spokesperson for ABC Unified. Eliasberg said public school teachers have strong 1st Amendment protections to share their political views online — expletives and all. Problems, however, could arise if the online political posts call into question a teacher’s ability to do their job, he said. “If I can’t wear a Harris [hat] you can’t wear it,” he said, referencing a student’s Trump hat, according to a recording of the outburst.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is a prime example, having leaned on this very rationale in self-defense after his infamous "Day One Memo" was met with nearly unanimous public disapproval. The argument goes something like this: Intelligent exercises of discretion that filter out low-risk and/or nonviolent offenders will allow prosecutors to focus on the real bad guys. In Alvin Bragg’s case, the idea that his broad non-prosecution policies are meant to facilitate the redirection of resources to more serious kinds of crime strains credulity in light of how much time and money his office has poured into the criminal prosecution of now-president-elect Donald J. Trump. He is also the author of Criminal (In)Justice: What the Push for Decarceration and Depolicing Gets Wrong and Who It Hurts Most. Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images

This week's mailbag gets into Braves, Padres, and Red Sox offseason possibilities, where Anthony Rizzo and Walker Buehler could land, off-the-wall Reds trade ideas, potential Rangers trade partners, and much more. Bill asks:What will Atlanta do this offseason with their shortstop, pitching, catching, and outfield needs? In terms of starting pitchers, the Braves have been linked to Walker Buehler, Nick Pivetta, and Nathan Eovaldi so far. I don't love the Pivetta fit, given that he declined a qualifying offer. They could sign Jeff Hoffman as a starter, given how well that strategy worked with Reynaldo Lopez.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. The ICC issued the warrants for alleged “war crimes” in Gaza, according to an official statement. The decision puts Mr Netanyahu in the company of Russian President Vladimir Putin, for whom the ICC issued an arrest warrant over Moscow’s war on Ukraine. While ICC warrants don’t guarantee arrests, they could significantly restrict Mr Netanyahu’s ability to travel to ICC member states. Mr Gallant recently had a fallout with Mr Netanyahu and was sacked from his position.
