UK pro-life leaders warn of ‘disaster’ in outsourcing assisted dying to private sectornull / Credit: Drop of Light/ShutterstockBy Madeleine TeahanLondon, England, Mar 11, 2025 / 14:45 pm (CNA). Leading pro-life campaigners in England and Wales have expressed alarm following reports that Westminster’s proposed “assisted dying” process might be outsourced to private companies. “Introducing assisted suicide to the U.K. would be a disaster waiting to happen, made potentially even worse if outsourced to the private sector,” she said. “It could easily create a perverse incentive to push assisted suicide on patients where, in a specialized Dignitas-like service, an assisted suicide business seeks to assist in ending the lives of their clients as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to maximize profits,” she added. The government health secretary, Wes Streeting, has made no secret of his concern that legalizing “assisted dying” would place too much pressure on the NHS.

My name is John Hunt and I am blessed to be Carol's husband, and Hannah, Louise and Amy's dad. That you had to consider the evidence was purely down to Kyle choosing to not admit responsibility. I so wanted to deliver these words, eye to eye with Kyle. When I was first invited to provide a victim impact statement, I initially misunderstood its purpose. Do I really need to detail the impact of having three quarters of my family murdered?

A 59-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter, the police in northern England said, after a container ship crashed into an oil tanker in the North Sea a day earlier, leaving one crew member missing and presumed dead. The container ship, the Solong, struck the Stena Immaculate, an anchored oil tanker that was carrying jet fuel and was being operated by the U.S. Navy at the time, officials said. One crew member from the Solong was missing, and an extensive search was called off on Monday night, Britain’s Coast Guard said. The Humberside Police in England said in a statement that it had begun a criminal investigation into the cause of the crash. Craig Nicholson, the detective chief superintendent, said the department had subsequently “arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision.”

Parents are to be given the ability to block teenagers from using TikTok during specific times, such as family meals, school, at night or during a holiday. Until now, TikTok and other social media platforms have enabled parents to set screen time allowances in hours and overnight, but not specific schedules during the day. There is increasing concern from parents about social media and pressure from charities on regulators and the government over new social media laws. Other features enabled by the app will allow parents to see who their child follows, who is following the child and which accounts the child has blocked. Users under the age of 16 will also have a meditation tool pushed into their feeds after 10pm to encourage them

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Further to your report “Planning shake-up to spur ‘building boom’”, (Mar 11), what is needed is a way of forcing developers to build on the sites for which they have already obtained planning permission. There are two sites in the centre of our village that have been sitting undeveloped for nearly ten years. In a nearby town a pub was illegally bulldozed more than five years ago, planning permission was granted for housing there yet it remains an empty site. And in an adjacent village a large site also has permission for hundreds of houses but remains undeveloped. The problem is not new sites for development but building on the sites that already have planning consent.

Barred owls are considered a top threat to northern spotted owls, which are scarce but widely distributed in Northern California, Oregon and Washington. If barred owls’ expansion is left unchecked, some experts believe they’ll go on to decimate California spotted owls — which inhabit California’s central and southern mature forests. Live EventsOnly temporary business mobility visas fall within the purview of the ongoing India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and other categories, including student visas, will not form part of the pact, the UK government has informed peers during a House of Lords debate. "On visas... our negotiations consider only business mobility, so they cover only relevant business visas, which are, by their nature, limited, temporary and for specific purposes. Student visas are not part of the trade deals," he said. In any trade agreement, one of the main ambitions is to reduce the tariffs that UK exporters face. So, I'm cautiously optimistic and hope that it (FTA) doesn't take that long," he said.

Ivy: “One bin is not enough for families, the food bin is rubbish the handle falls down and wind has blown it open, we are told to contain the recycling so has to be put in a bin liner as straight into recycling bags does not contain it. It takes up a lot of space to separate rubbish, garden bins have to be paid for, only good point is most get an actual bin so cats and gulls do not tare binbags everywhere although bins have been so full many can't shut the lids”
