Good-ground horses have been increasingly marginalised in modern Grand Nationals as Aintree waters the track in an attempt to slow the race down but, with the going drying as fast as it can be irrigated this week, they will never get a better chance and Hyland can capitalise on that by winning the 177th edition of the world’s greatest steeplechase. In the ‘old days’ running a novice in the National would have been considered foolhardy but Rule The World and Noble Yeats, both winners within the last 10 years, were novices, indeed Rule The World had not won a race over fences when he turned up at Aintree in 2016. As such there is every possibility Hyland is still ahead of the handicapper, another box which needs to be ticked in order to win a modern National. But this National is nothing if not open and a dozen or more have good chances. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British luxury car manufacturer, announced on Saturday that it will temporarily halt shipments to the United States in April. "In 2023, UK car production fell 13.9% to 779,584 vehicles, with more than 77% of those cars destined for export. To combat the impending tariff impact, UK carmakers, including JLR, have been stockpiling vehicles in the US ahead of the tariff increase. "Despite these efforts, the new tariffs on vehicles could significantly affect the UK car industry's export strategy. However, cars make up a small portion of the overall trade between the two countries, which is dominated by services.

UK's Jaguar Land Rover to pause shipments to US over tariffs
LONDON (Reuters) -Jaguar Land Rover will pause shipments of its Britain-made cars to the United States for a month, it said on Saturday, as it considers how to mitigate the cost of President Donald Trump's 25% tariff. Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, confirmed the temporary export suspension after the Times newspaper reported the plan. The United States is the second-biggest importer of British-made cars after the European Union, with nearly a 20% share, data from industry body SMMT shows. Jaguar Land Rover, one of Britain's biggest producers by volume, said in its statement that the U.S. was an important market for its luxury brands. The Times said that Jaguar Land Rover is thought to have a couple of months' supply of cars already in the U.S., which will not be subject to the new tariffs.

Big companies have for years undervalued imports into the US to reduce taxes. This can be done in many ways, including third-party invoicing and setting up subsidiary companies to re-invoice imported goods. Over many years I have watched countries increase import taxes to deal with revenue shortfalls, only to be defeated by more under-invoicing by importers. Lawrie MayWorthingSir, I am not an economist and cannot pretend to offer an informed view on President Trump’s tariffs, but the production of ever-cheaper products for mostly western consumption has not been entirely positive.

Carer who used bed-bound 95-year-old's card 28 times to steal thousands struck off
Lisa-Marie Edwards, a senior carer at Snowdon Care Home in Llanberis from February 2020 to January 2023, was accused of taking the resident's bank card without her knowledge to make repeated withdrawals from her accounts. The panel hard that the victim died exactly one week after she found out her card had been used, on February 7, 2023. However, Edwards was accused of "systematically and cynically" abusing the access she had to her bank card after a bank statement revealed repeated withdrawals.
