What are the challenges for the secretary-general of NESDC amid a global economic crisis caused by the pandemic? For the economic crisis in 2008-09 that spread across the US and Europe, the Thai government implemented stimulus measures to spur domestic consumption and keep the country afloat. The country's lockdown measures and a sharp fall in foreign visitors can be blamed for the 12.2% GDP contraction in the second quarter. The proportion of non-performing loans to total loans was 3.08% in the second quarter, up from 3.04% in the first quarter, while public debt made up 44.8% of GDP in the second quarter, up from 41.7% in the first quarter. No 'peace and order' at allWith the decision to round up the leaders of anti-dictatorship activists who occupied areas surrounding the Democracy Monument ahead of today's planned rally, the police may have hoped to prevent a face-off between the protesters and right-wing extremists. Understandably, police intended to keep the activists who are pressing for monarchy reforms away from the rally site located along part of today's royal motorcade route. There are worries the situation will spiral out of control as some hardcore activists may challenge the authorities. What the country is facing today tells us how much of a sham the six years of peace and order under the military regime was. If violence erupts, Gen Prayut and his government cannot escape responsibility.

Thailand to make, supply Covid jab by AstraZenecaThailand has agreed to manufacture and supply AstraZeneca's experimental Covid-19 vaccine domestically and for other nations in the region, the British and Thai governments said. The announcement by the British embassy in Bangkok did not specify how many doses of the vaccine candidate, AZD1222, would be distributed in Thailand. Chairman of Siam Bioscience, Satitpong Sukvimol said the company was aiming to have the first batch of vaccines available in the middle of next year. This would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to successfully manufacture a Covid-19 vaccine. Regarding the progress of a Covid-19 vaccine being developed by BioNet-Asia, the company's president Vitoon Vonghangool said the company is negotiating with Australia's Food and Drug Administration to conduct the first-phase trial of a Covid-19 DNA vaccine in Australia.
