Dialogue vital to find peaceWith the declaration of the state of emergency, the confrontation between Prayut Chan-o-cha and the anti-dictatorship activists has overwhelmingly intensified, and once again the country has plunged into division. The Prayut government needs to handle the situation carefully, or the confrontation may well turn violent. After all, they must bear in mind that the Oct 14 rally was peaceful and the protest leaders were unarmed. On the contrary, it's the state authorities that acted in a suspicious way when many people, wearing yellow shirts branding themselves as royalists, infiltrated the crowds. This decree, which stipulates the special powers of state authorities, ie five-day detention, infringes upon people's rights and freedoms, a condition that will fuel anger -- and contention will surge.

They shared an old post about illegal crossings, as explained in 2014 by the state enterprise's PR team. It's surprising how the number of illegal crossings has increased over the years. We are told 87% of collisions occur at illegal crossings. Most illegal crossings are developed from old, small local routes, used by locals. Imagine if we still have the problem of illegal crossings when the high-speed train service scheduled to open in 2025 is built launches.

(Photo by Arnun Chonmahatrakool)The anti-government rally on Wednesday reflects structural conflicts in society while the anti-government movement is expected to weaken now several protest leaders have been arrested, an academic said. We will have to continue living with it as long as the constitution is not recognised by all stakeholders," Mr Yutthaporn said. He predicted the anti-government movement will weaken now police have arrested several protest leaders after the government declared a state of emergency in Bangkok earlier on Thursday to disperse the protest outside Government House. Without the protest leaders, the movement will become increasingly emasculated, Mr Yutthaporn said. "The Oct 14 rally may have drawn a large crowd, but without their leaders, it is impossible for the group to make any further strategically important moves," Mr Yutthaporn said.

The court granted the warrants following a request by Dusit police over an incident about 5.30pm on Wednesday on Phitsanulok Road. On that day, the royal motorcade of Her Majesty the Queen passed along the road, which was cordoned off by security officers to stop protesters. However, many protesters got through, and many were seen flashing the three-finger salute as her motorcade passed. Meanwhile, protest leaders Arnon Nampa and Prasit Khrutharoj were arrested in Bangkok and sent to Chiang Mai, where the provincial court issued arrest warrants for them. Before he was arrested, Mr Arnon accused the police of using questionable tactics by leading the Queen's motorcade into the protest area.

'Emily in Paris': the myth of 'la vie en rose' lives on'Emily in Paris' has been accused of recycling tired cliches of the French capitalPARIS - Love it, hate it or love to hate it: the smash-hit Netflix series "Emily in Paris", which perpetuates long-held fantasies about the City of Light involving berets and pleasure-loving Frenchies, leaves no one indifferent. It is a sugarcoated reality that irritates Lindsey Tramuta, an American writer who has lived in Paris for 15 years. Criticised too for magnifying the French-US culture clash, "Emily in Paris" has nevertheless found success in recycling the decades-old cliches and Netflix is entirely at ease with that. "If Emily had come to your city and not 'in Paris', what would the big cliches of the series be?," it joked on Twitter. "We often forget that Americans see Paris as a type of Disneyland -- Emily takes a selfie with a pain au chocolat," says the former model.

A rare win for quarry localsA recent ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court to revoke a renewed concession for a quarry in Suwan Khuha of Nong Bua Lam Phu province was a rare victory for local villagers who for years have sought to protect an area that has immense archeological and environment value, as well as save their own livelihoods. In their petition, the villagers alleged that part of the concession area is a national forest reserve. They were finally able to rejoice upon receiving the court ruling. The villagers are aware of this as they kick off the restoration of the abandoned quarry site, he said. The fight may not be over yet, but the Aug 18 court ruling against the quarry set a precedent.

Both sides must give peace a chanceAnti-dictatorship demonstrators led by Khana Ratsadorn march from the Democracy Monument to Government House, during Wednesday's rally. In fact, most of the PDRC leaders made a comeback in the public arena, in different roles. The Khana Ratsadorn leaders' lack of experience in handling a large-scale rally movement arguably increased the risk of clashes. Let's hope both sides are satisfied with a symbolic victory, having had the chance to flex their muscles and make their statements. On top of that, all parties must value peace, and give it a chance.
