The heartbroken family of a sergeant killed during a training exercise has paid tribute to a dad who made his family proud every day of their lives. A police probe investigating the circumstances which led up to Mr Hillier's death at the Castlemartin tank range has now been launched. Sergeant Hillier's mother, Karen, said he had made her proud from the day he was born, and would always be her little boy. Lieutenant Colonel H Llewelyn-Usher, Sergeant Hillier's commanding officer, said the death had sent shockwaves across the batallion. He said: "Sergeant (Gav) Hillier and I have worked side-by-side throughout our careers; he was an outstanding soldier, and a close friend.
