The full moon in April, known as the Pink Moon - not for the color but for the phlox flower that blooms in early springtime - will shine bright this Saturday. The almanac was first to call it the Pink Moon in print, after the herb moss pink, also known as creeping phlox, moss phlox, or mountain phlox. The Pink Moon also is known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon, as it appears around the time that shad would swim upstream to spawn. April: Pink Moon as it heralded the appearance of Phlox subulata or moss pink – one of spring's first flowers. May: Flower Moon because of the abundance of blossoms.
