The case for local council elections

KUALA LUMPUR: Local council elections can be reinstated if the Local Government Act of 1976 is amended. He said the Federal Government should look into the enactment on local elections passed by the Penang state assembly in 2013. He added that local elections should be conducted by the Election Commission. “What it does guarantee, however, is that when councillors do not do their jobs they will be given the boot in the next local election.”Derek said elections should first be held for mayors and local council presidents as they held executive powers. Bukit Bandaraya Residents’ Association adviser Datuk Mumtaz Ali said local elections would provide a system of checks and balances.
