Sudan releases dozens of political prisonersFrom RAJI BASHIR in Khartoum, SudanKHARTOUM, (CAJ News) – THE European Union (EU) has welcomed the release of more than 80 political prisoners in Sudan. An EU delegation and the resident EU Heads of Mission in the East African country nonetheless called on the government of President Omar al-Bashir to promptly release the remaining political detainees. “The EU remains committed to supporting Sudan on the way towards national reconciliation and long-lasting peace in the country for the sake of all Sudanese people,” EU stated. Aide Abdelrahman El Mahdi, the presidential aide, said al-Bashir ordered the release of the political detainees from the Kober Prison in Khartoum North. The activists have been arrested in recent months in the wake of widespread protests against the rising cost of basic consumer goods.
