Spanish Embassy strike in UK is over, but protests continueThe Embassy staff are back to work and it should now be (a bit) easier to get a visa to go to Spainstrike by Spanish staff working in the Embassy in London and three consulates located elsewhere in Britain has come to an end after talks with representatives of the Spanish Government with the workers’ union. The consular staff were originally striking over the fact that their pay had not risen in over 14 years, despite huge increases in inflation over that time, and it was warned that applications for visas for Brits looking to move to Spain could be affected by the strikeNow, after 50 days of indefinite strike action “we have decided to temporarily suspend the indefinite strike,” according to one of those on the picket lines. “We are returning to our jobs, but on a temporary basis until the promises that the ministry made to us really are kept,” he said. “In any case we are still protesting because there are many issues that remain unresolved, such as the conditions we work in, the situation of the infrastructures which citizens have to go to and also all the computer services which do not allow for any flexibility.”The staff have promised to keep up the pressure by demonstrating during their lunch break, such as by piling suitcases against the door of the Embassy building as a symbol of their precarious working situation and the difficulty of getting a passport on time.
