"During the meeting, they payed special attention to issues related to the development of trade and economic relations between Russia and Libya aimed at their complete recovery along the restoration of the security situation in Libya and profound resolution of the Libyan crisis," the statement reads. After Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011, Libya ceased functioning as a unified state. Today it is split between two governments: the eastern part of the country is controlled by the parliament and the Libyan National Army (LNA) while the UN-backed Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) controls the west. In April, LNA under the leadership of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar launched a major offensive on Tripoli leaving hundreds Libyans killed and thousands wounded.
