taking stock:Railways representatives of various divisions and district-level officials participated in the review meeting called by Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, in Mangaluru on Friday. To Mr. Shetty’s plea to facilitate use of railway land for approach roads to Veeranagara and Vijayanagara, Naresh Lalwani, Southern Railway’s Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager, said MCC can use the land for three years. The Railways engineer cautioned MCC to prepare the design properly, lest there be one more Padil-Bajal-like situation at Jeppu Kudpady. He said the authorities would later take a call on extending the period depending upon whether the land would be required for the expansion of Mangaluru Junction Railway Station. Meanwhile, Sudarshan Puttur of the Railway Commuters’ Forum alleged that at least in six instances, the Deputy Commissioner has not given no-objection certificates to close down existing railway level crossings in lieu of RuBs/RoBs in the district.
