People pray for divine support to tide over the hard times in Karkidakom. For Keralites, Karkidakom, the last month in the Malayalam calendar, is also the lean season of ‘panja karkidakom’ when the State witnesses hard times out of monsoon fury. Many Hindu organisations as well as temple committees have made arrangements for Ramayanam recital through out Karkidakom, which begins on Saturday. During Karkkidakam, most Hindu homes reverberate with the recital of Adhyatma Ramayanam of Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, regarded as the father of Malayalam literature. Off late, Karkidakom has also earned the name Ramayana maasom (month of Ramayanam) with Hindu organisations popularising the tradition of reciting the holy text during the period.
