Defending champions Germany led the dressage phase on 122.00 followed by France 122.20, Australia 126.40, Great Britain 127.70, Ireland 135.60 and the United States equal with New Zealand on 137.50. Johnstone, competing in his first Olympics, lies 23rd with Tim Price 29th and Jonelle Price 43rd. Johnstone said New Zealand would have to attack the cross country course in the hope of making up ground.
