Volunteer bicycle repairer Alex Gorrie helps University of Otago student Yelah Mcdougall during an Enviro-Week event yesterday. Photo: Peter McIntoshAbout half a dozen bicycles were repaired and awareness was raised about do-it-yourself bicycle repairs during an event at the University of Otago campus yesterday. Providing low-cost repairs, and teaching cyclists how to tackle the work themselves through the do-it-yourself repair centres, was helping to make cycling more affordable and sustainable, Mr Gorrie said. Bicycle repair volunteer and Malcam Trust co-ordinator Guy Pringle said the repair session had ''helped create awareness'' of low-cost repair options. Another-do-it-yourself bicycle repair session will be run at the same spot, on the University Union lawn, between noon and 2pm today.
