Judiciary, banks unite to reduce case backlogs

Disputes involving banks are 219 or 24.09 per cent of the files, the Judiciary said yesterday. Most banks, however, prefer shouldering the fees for clients in a bid to retain them, KBA director for marketing and communications Nuru Mugambi said. The Judiciary is yet to value property in disputes before the Family division. Bankers have partnered with the High Court’s Family, Commercial and Tax divisions to speed up resolution of a growing backlog of disputes valued at hundreds of billions of shillings through court-led mediation. About 909 cases valued at Sh10.06 billion have been filed at the Commercial and Tax divisions between January 2015 to May this year alone, adding to the backlog of cases some of which have been pending for at least five years.
