Cloud providers are racing to invest in GPU-enabled virtual machines. With the advancements in neural networks, deep learning, and the intelligent applications built around them, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have announced large investments in GPUs. Even if AMD’s new consumer GPUs for gaming are on-par or better, Nvidia is poised to be the Intel of GPUs and dominate the market if AMD and Intel can’t catch up on machine learning. Over time, as breakthroughs were made in machine learning, engineers realized they could take advantage of the parallel processes in GPUs for complicated machine learning calculations rather than rely on thousands of CPUs. In 2013, DigitalOcean was one of the first companies to offer high performing SSDs in the cloud.
