Coronavirus: Longer Sunday opening hours will hit staff and small shops, Labour warn


It follows reports that the government plans to suspend Sunday trading laws for a year. Under current laws large supermarkets in England can only open for six hours on a Sunday. But it’s feared supermarkets being allowed to open for longer will put pressure on high street shops and independent retailers to follow suit. “This plan would hit the high street the hardest. It is wrong because the big supermarkets have seen increased trade, whereas it’s the small shops on the high street that have suffered the most through this crisis.
