Kinsuk BasuBeleghata: A pedestrian underpass crucial to minimising accidents on the Beleghata stretch of the Bypass is being readied for an April opening after missing two deadlines, the first one before the start of the FIFA U-17 World Cup last October. The Beleghata underpass had been commissioned a year ago along with another one near the Hyatt Regency hotel to eliminate these risky pedestrian crossovers on the Bypass. The CMDA has written to Lalbazar, the city police headquarters, for permission to barricade a portion of the Bypass near Subhas Sarobar for excavation. Construction of both underpasses has been a challenge because of concrete boxes five metres underground. Engineers in the CMDA said they had no clue about the presence of reinforced concrete boxes underground until they showed up during excavation.
