"The correctness of document verification will depend on the number of those excluded from the draft list. The figure should be between 50 lakh foreigners in 2001, as per the estimate by the previous UPA government, and 80 lakh foreigners in 2011, according to the estimate by the present NDA government," he said. Raising issues about post NRC-update period, Hazarika said, "Updating the NRC only will not save indigenous people from becoming minority unless a protective legislation is brought into place. Identifying the foreigners on the basis of 1971 cut-off causes a lot of complications that primarily benefit the foreigners. Also, they did not evict encroachers, who are of Bangladeshi origin, on the government's grazing land," he added.
