Ninety-five groups seeking to become registered political parties in the country currently have their applications pending before the Independent National Electoral Commission, The PUNCH reports. Nigeria currently has a total of 18 registered political parties. INEC had in February 2020 de-registered 74 political parties after assessing the then existing political parties. “The total number of applications from associations seeking registration as political parties as of today (Wednesday) is 95,” the spokesman of the electoral body’s chairman said. “However, the commission will determine how many political parties will be registered and when, based on laid down rules,” he added.
