Naturally weighed down by the pressure of its newcomer voters from Sri Lanka, Canada’s political leadership has, by all accounts, abandoned basic Commonwealth principles of good governance for domestic political expediency. It is true that Sri Lanka has been far too slow in addressing accountability issues raised internationally over alleged violations of International Human Rights Law during that military campaign. Its statement on Sri Lanka is not without a little irony peppered into it. It says they have given 3 million dollars for the UN’s humanitarian assistance for starving Sri Lanka. The Ontario state legislature listed Sri Lanka as a country where ‘genocide’ occurred.

Hundreds of millions of light-years away in a distant galaxy, a star orbiting a supermassive black hole is being violently ripped apart under the black hole's immense gravitational pull. According to Wevers, having the opportunity to study a partial TDE gives unprecedented insight into the existence of supermassive black holes and the orbital dynamics of stars in the centers of galaxies. "When the core returns to the black hole it essentially steals all the gas away from the black hole via gravity and as a result there is no matter to accrete and hence the system goes dark," Pasham says. If the star collided head-on with the black hole and passed the event horizon -- the threshold where the speed needed to escape the black hole surpasses the speed of light -- the star would be consumed by the black hole. "This study outlines methodology to potentially predict the next snack times of supermassive black holes in external galaxies," says Pasham.

KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (AP) — The emotions came pouring out of Mikaela Shiffrin when she matched Lindsey Vonn’s women’s World Cup skiing record with her 82nd win Sunday. Most races these days I’ll think about him and I’m able to kind of refocus,” Shiffrin said. While the often-injured Vonn required 395 races for her 82 wins, Shiffrin has done it in just 233 races. And at age 27, Shiffrin could compete for several more years and win many more races. A few kids were waving American flags and family members of Paula Moltzan, another American skier, were on hand wearing USA hockey jerseys.

Morning thoughts at twilight Reminiscences by Dr Sanjiva Wijesinha View(s): View(s):After many years of living overseas, I am back once more in Colombo. Seated on the verandah in a comfortable armchair and sipping my morning cup of tea, I can savour the vista of green in front of me. I realise that my twilight is here and the shadows are gradually lengthening for me. For the present though let me just live in the moment and enjoy the early morning atmosphere, watching the birds and their antics and listening to the sounds of this rural morning. And I shall wait in pleasant anticipation for the mouth-watering breakfast that I know is being prepared for me.
