If you’re Ireland, Test matches are quite like buses, you wait ages for one and then suddenly here come three to take you on a tour of the subcontinent. Having already played a one-off Test in Bangladesh earlier this year, Ireland are now set for two more against Sri Lanka in Galle. As for Sri Lanka, in a World Cup year, this series provides them with the opportunity to trial out a few new faces. Following a trialling tour of New Zealand, Sri Lanka might well be looking forward to more accustomed climes. But for their batters, who would have been utilising fairly separate skill-sets in New Zealand’s bouncier conditions, Galle might initially take a little getting used to.

MARKO DJURICAWhile Russian authorities have repeatedly claimed to be “rescuing” Ukrainian civilians in the territories they seize control of, those who survived Russia’s occupation of Kherson say troops systematically tortured civilians—sometimes to death. Thirty four people interviewed by Human Rights Watch after Russian forces withdrew from the area last November described a slew of torture sites throughout the region, according to a new report released Thursday. Their accounts are just the latest in a rapidly growing list of war crimes allegations that include rape, torture, forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and a genocidal campaign to wipe out the Ukrainian identity. Agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service were present for much of the torture, survivors said, and the violence went hand in hand with an attempt to force victims to embrace their new “Russian world.”Read more at The Daily Beast. COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sen. Tim Scott on Wednesday launched an exploratory committee for a 2024 GOP presidential bid, a step that comes just shy of making his campaign official. A quick rundown on exploratory committees, how they're used and why:WHAT IS AN EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE? By launching an exploratory committee, a potential candidate gets dual waves of media attention — the launch of the committee and then the official candidacy. Scott is set to announce the formation of an exploratory committee, according to a person familiar with his plans who spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night ahead of the official announcement. Those donors could become key to an exploratory committee, which gives Scott the ability to raise money directly for a possible bid, cash that can fund polling and travel. If elected, Scott, the only Black Republican senator, would be the nation's first Black Republican president. During a February visit to Iowa, which holds the first GOP presidential caucuses, Scott spoke of a “new American sunrise” rooted in collaboration.

His phone rings constantly with calls from locals and the world's media as he prepares to welcome a relative — U.S. President Joe Biden. “He said, ‘I’m going to come back into Ballina.’ And sure to God he’s going to come back into Ballina,” Blewitt said. “His Irish roots are really deep in his heart.”The 43-year-old plumber was among Biden relations invited to the White House for St. Patrick’s Day last month. The Irish Family History Centre says Biden “is among the most ‘Irish’ of all U.S. Presidents” — 10 of his 16 great-great grandparents were from the Emerald Isle. The trip is also a reminder of the central role of Irish Americans in U.S. political life.

This was the total apex of Girls mania: a time when this unassuming HBO series could induce blind rancor, giddy acclaim, and a bizarre, ambiguous bitterness in all those who came near it. She tells them, hilariously, that she believes herself to be the voice of her generation. My friend had finally confirmed that Girls was out-of-touch, vain, elitist, and oppressively New York, and she gleefully hate-watched the next batch of episodes. In retrospect, anyone who digested that line at face value was clearly missing the point. But this criticism was par for the course during the age of Girls.
