US opens formal probe into Tesla Autopilot system
The NHTSA is formal investigating Tesla's Autopilot, saying it has trouble spotting parked emergency vehicles, resulting in 11 accidents since 2018. Jim Cota said the officer was not in the cruiser and the Tesla driver suffered minor injuriesHow does Tesla's Autopilot work? Autopilot is a hands-on driver assistance system that is intended to be used only with a fully attentive driver. Before enabling Autopilot, driver must agree to 'keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times' and to always 'maintain control and responsibility for your car.' Of the 31 crashes, 25 involved Tesla Autopilot, resulting in 10 deaths, according to data released by the NHTSA.

Plymouth holds minute's silence to remember five shooting victims
Their brave and selfless actions were hailed today following a minute's silence held across the city to remember the five victims of Britain's worst mass shooting for a decade. Relatives of Lee and Sophie Martyn attended the 11am vigil at the city's Guildhall and fought back tears while tributes were being paid. Armed with a shotgun, he then went out into the street and killed Sophie Martyn, aged three, and her father, Lee Martyn, 43, who bravely tried to shield his daughter from the bullets. Mourners fell silent as five gongs, to represent each of the victims, were sounded and everyone paused for the minute's silence. Questions are continuing to mount over how Davison, who took his own life after the shooting spree, was able to obtain a firearms licence.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the newly initiated Royal College Prefects’ Council saw the “work from home” culture as an opportunity to put to bed this elusive project. ‘The boys’ had to shoulder the tasks of developing, programming, designing, writing, content collecting and even video production for publicity. “Built by boys in the school” is a phrase inspired by a book published in 1931 titled ‘The History of Royal College’, written by 20 boys in the school at the time. The College hopes that this project inspires projects of a similar calibre both within the school and across the Island.

Coronavirus- 2,428 fresh cases reported in Sri Lanka

Cut down public circulation by 80-90 percent - GMOA
The Government Medical Officers’ Association urges the government to cut down public circulation in society by 80% to 90% to control the spread of COVID-19. Issuing a statement, the GMOA says that the government should declare that country is at the COVID-19 Risk level 04. They say the COVID-19 Task Force and the Ministry of Health should take the necessary steps as soon as possible and monitor whether these measures are carried out properly. The GMOA further says that the country’s vaccination process is outside the scope of the scientific method. Through the statement, the GMOA also urges the government to provide the third dose or the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare workers as COVID-19 infections among the healthcare workers are on the rise.

Sri Lanka s Covid-19 recoveries up by 2,325

The tally of confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the country thus far is 358,608. The total number of Covid-19 recoveries has now reached 312,057 while over 40,000 infected patients are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals and treatment centers.

Cabraal on logic behind nighttime curfews
State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal says that social gatherings such as parties that had taken place in the nighttime had led to the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus in the country. The State Minister of Finance, Capital Markets, and State Enterprise Reforms explained the reasoning behind the nighttime curfew imposed in the country, joining the Ada Derana ‘Big Focus’ program today (August 16). It has been revealed at points that parties have spread this [Delta] variant. Meanwhile, Cabraal refuted various rumors circulating on social media that his son’s wedding was to be held today. Malaysian PM resigns after failing to get majority support
Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigned less than 18 months into his tenure, becoming the country’s shortest-ruling leader after conceding that he lost majority support to govern. Muhyiddin, who came to power in March 2020, will remain as caretaker until a new premier is appointed, the palace said in a statement. One government minister wrote on social media that the Cabinet had tendered their resignations to the king and a deputy minister thanked Muhyiddin for his service. Mr Muhyiddin will perform the prime minister’s duties until his successor is appointed. In the statement, Malaysia’s King, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, also added that holding general elections in the near future “is not the best option” due to the welfare and security of the people.

Police anti narcotic operations continue, three arrested yesterday
Three persons were arrested yesterday in various areas of the country in connection with narcotic related offences, Police Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated. Accordingly, the Western Province Crimes Division arrested a 41 year old woman with 1 kg and 200 g of Kerala cannabis in the Sapugaskanda area. Meanwhile, the Divisional Crime Detection Bureau of Anuradhapura arrested a 30 year old individual for possession of 10 g of heroin. Additionally, the Special Task Force (STF) was involved in the arrest of a person in the Wellampitiya Police area for possession of 43 g of Ice. Senior DIG Rohana notes that continuous anti narcotic operations will be carried out and urged the public to inform authorities of any such activities by dialing 1997.

Media Release - Efforts to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals in Afghanistan
The Foreign Ministry wishes to clarify the following with regard to the current situation in Afghanistan and the ongoing efforts to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals there:· The Foreign Ministry is currently in the process of working with international partners to facilitate the return of Sri Lankan nationals in Afghanistan, if they wish to return. · The Sri Lanka Embassy in Kabul, which is functioning from a hotel, currently does not have any Sri Lankan nationals present and is manned by one local staff. · The Embassy is in possession of details of forty three (43) Sri Lankan nationals in Afghanistan while the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) has certain details as well. The Sri Lankan nationals present in Afghanistan mostly work for the United Nations, international organizations, NATO military bases and private companies. · The Foreign Ministry remains appraised of the situation and will make every effort to ensure the safe return of Sri Lankan nationals, if they wish to return.
