Thailand donates medical equipment to Sri Lanka to support COVID treatment
Foreign Secretary Jayanath Colombage accepted a donation of medical equipment today (Sep. 01) from Chargé d’ affaires of the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo Tayatat Kanjanapipatkul at a symbolic ceremony at the Foreign Ministry. The donation was thereafter handed over to Secretary of the State Ministry of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Dr. R.M.S.K. The donation comprises 30 oxygen concentrators, 02 ventilators, 108 oxygen tanks, 62 regulators/cannulae sets, 160 pulse oximeters and 150 personal protective equipment (PPE) sets. This donation includes contributions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara Somdet Phra Sangharaj Wat, Bovoranives Vihara Foundation, Sri Lanka Association of Thailand, Thai-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo. The Sri Lanka Embassy in Bangkok coordinated and made the arrangements to send the donation which was air transported by courtesy of Qatar Airways.

Taliban spokesman accuses Australia of human rights violations in Afghanistan
A Taliban spokesperson has accused Australian soldiers of war crimes in Afghanistan, while cruelly claiming the 41 diggers who were killed in action 'died in vain'. Suhail Shaheen accused Australian forces of committing brutal 'human rights violations' during the west's 20-year military campaign and called for soldiers to be prosecuted. 'They committed some of the worst and most brutal human rights violations by cutting fingers off dead bodies and killing farmers. The same applies for my country, Afghanistan.' In a video uploaded to social media, an Afghan-Australian father-of-three was beaten by the Taliban while scrambling to reach Kabul Airport.

Sugar and rice prices controlled from tomorrow

40 cops disciplined for getting paralytic at the Paralympics
The officers were members of a special security unit from Yamanashi Prefecture sent to Tokyo to provide back-up to local police at venues and to control traffic during the Games. Sources also told the paper that several of the officers had gone to a brothel during their stay in Tokyo. The entire unit was relieved of its duties in the capital and ordered to return to Yamanashi Prefecture on Monday. In a statement issued to the UTY Yamanashi television station, the prefectural police said the allegations are being investigated and that 'measures' will be taken. 'It's embarrassing that they got drunk, went out and made a fuss with members of the public,' said one post on the site.

Total COVID-19 recoveries up by 2,060
September 1, 2021 03:00 pmAnother 2,060 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals and treatment centres as they have recovered from the virus infection, the Ministry of Health stated. This brings the total number of recoveries reported in the country to 376,216. Sri Lanka has confirmed as many as 440,302 cases of COVID-19 to date. According to Epidemiology Unit’s data, 54,901 virus-infected patients are currently under medical care. Meanwhile, the death from novel coronavirus now stands at 9,185.

Apostolic Nuncio discusses Easter attacks with G.L.
During a meeting between his Eminence Archbishop Brian Udaigwe, Apostolic Nuncio to Sri Lanka and Foreign Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris yesterday (31), the topic of the investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks of 2019 was discussed, according to a press release from the Foreign Ministry. While expressing deep sorrow on the pain and suffering undergone by the Catholic Church due to the Easter attacks, the Minister noted his understanding of the sentiments of the Catholic Church, and the need for justice to bring all those who were responsible before the law. The Minister remarked that every endeavour should be made to ensure that the purest motives of the Catholic Church are not hijacked, either locally or internationally. While expressing his sincere appreciation for the attention being received by the Catholic Church and Catholics in Sri Lanka, though they are a minority, the Papal Nuncio indicated that he has not witnessed similar recognition given to Catholics in other countries. The Apostolic Nuncio suggested that a meeting could be arranged at an early date with a Committee of the Bishop’s Conference, so that the Government could discuss the relevant issues with representatives of the Church.

Padron Ranjan, Opposition Leader makes request from President
COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has requested the President to pardon Ranjan Ramanayake, who is currently in jail. The opposition leader in his letter noted that Ramanayake from January 12, 2021 has been in prison for 232 days.
