Geetha urges CBSL Governor to reconsider 100% deposit margin order
Pointing out that the majority of the people use fans and refrigerators in households, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Geetha Kumarasinghe urged the Government and the Central Bank to consider amending the 100% cash deposit regulations on such items that need to be imported. Reminding people about the time when former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike rationed food and clothing, and all imports were halted, Kumarasinghe stated that at the rate the country is moving, such a situation may be an outcome. “Growing up, we were taught ‘A for Apple’. Yet, we did not know what an apple is,” Kumarasinghe remarked,She went on to note that foods such as apples and grapes are considered essential despite what some people might say, further questioning whether this is the future the people want for the future generations. In conclusion, she urged the Central Bank Governor to have some compassion and to reconsider the decision, or at the most, exclude some of the items on the list, so as to ease the pressure on the people of Sri Lanka who are currently in the midst of a pandemic.

AKD condemns Sajith’s request to call for election
In response to the statement made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa which requested the Government to step down and call for an election immediately, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka said that Premadasa should get his “head examined,”Dissanayaka called Premadasa “utterly immature and Irresponsible”, further stating that this was not an appropriate time to conduct an election. Premadasa had condemned the Government on Saturday (11) for being “irresponsible and lacking management skills” in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic, along with the current economic situation.

Jabs for children with comorbidities from 21 September
By Pamodi WaravitaThe Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians (SLCP) yesterday (12) told The Morning that roughly 30,000 children over the age of 12 years who have comorbidities will be given a Covid-19 vaccine, tentatively from 21 September. “All children over the age of 12 years and having comorbidities will be prioritised (in the first phase). Surantha Perera, speaking to the media yesterday, appealed to all parents who have children with comorbidities to ensure that their children get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available for them. He added that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were the vaccines of choice in the West for children, out of which the Pfizer vaccine was considered popular. Thus, in Sri Lanka, children above the age of 12 years will be receiving the US-manufactured Pfizer vaccine.

Zoo workers seek President intervention to ‘reverse’ resignation
By Ruwan Laknath JayakodyTrade unions, attached to the National Zoological Gardens Department and representing its employees, have written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the wake of the resignation of the Department’s Director General (DG) Ishini Wickremesinghe, requesting that said resignation not be accepted and that she be reappointed to the post. The letter has been signed by the Sri Lanka Podujana National Zoological Gardens Department Employees/Workers Association (Dehiwala) Chairman Krishantha Christopals. The other union that is involved in supporting this action is the National Zoological Gardens Active Employees/Workers Association. The so-called owners were those individuals who had possession of the elephants prior to the litigation, after having allegedly captured the pachyderms, including elephant calves, from the wild. Since 2015, 47 of these elephants, including calves, were taken from their so-called owners and placed under court-ordered custody with the Wildlife Conservation Department and the National Zoological Gardens Department.

‘Writing is not just about finding your voice, it’s about discovering the reader in you’
The Last Latte, as a short story, was developed looking at the economical and social factors that were taking place in Colombo based on the urban context about five years ago. The biggest challenge Boange faced when writing this novel was getting a convincing angle on the story as it is a fictional piece of work. I built the story in a way where people could relate to the situation based on characters with sentimental approaches,” he stated. Boange expressed adding that writing is not simply about finding your voice, it’s also about finding the reader in you. He stated that his writing so far as a fiction writer has taken him to experiment with different styles of writing.

Avoiding an epidemic of educational poverty
With school closure, less than 10% of students had the ability to connect to real-time face-to-face education, online. The education crisis has now reached catastrophic proportions, since for over 18 months no proper school education has been in place. These have been referred to as “failed improvisations of pandemic education”. We are “cultivating” an under-educated/uneducated class of children, those who have been deprived of long-term school education and peer interaction. It is likely that this pandemic will leave us with nothing short of an epidemic of educational poverty.
