Low-pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal
The Department of Meteorology says there is a possibility a low-pressure area to develop in the south-east of Bay of Bengal (BOB) during next 24 hours. Due to the influence of the low-pressure area which is about to form in the Southeast BOB, heavy showers and sudden increase of wind speed 60-70 kmph are expected over the sea area 04-08N and 86-92E. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture the South-East Bay of Bengal sea area (04-08N and 86-92E) from tomorrow (08) evening, until further notice. Since there can be very heavy showers or thundershowers associated with strong winds up to 60-70 kmph over the aforementioned sea area. Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya district.

Tax reliefs for millionaires, deductions for pensioners: Sajith
The Government granted millions of rupees in tax reliefs for millionaires to live luxuries lives, whereas deductions are made from pensioners in the name of the Agraha Insurance scheme, said Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa. Now, they are trying to deduct money secretly without informing the pensioners in the name of Agraha,” said Premadasa. Premadasa further added that the Government is trying to recover the tax revenue funds that was lost by reducing pensions. “I would like to inform pensioners to be vigilant about this. Stop the move to secretly reduce the funds from the pensioners, otherwise we will take to the streets on behalf of the pensioners,” Premadasa said.

Sunny Side Up: SJB plans alternative govt.
The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) last weekend held a residential workshop for its parliamentary group at a hotel in Kalutara. Around 40 SJB MPs attended the workshop, and the absence of several senior SJB MPs had been criticised by several MPs who had attended the meetings. Several topics were discussed during the workshop. Further, a decision was taken to hold discussions with all small political parties to muster their support for the programme to formulate an alternative government. It was finally decided that workshops for the parliamentary group would be held once in two months in order to ensure that all SJB MPs were aware of the party’s path and were in line with them.

Four Sri Lanka records shattered at Nationals
Women’s middle distance runner Gayanthika Abeyratne established the most impressive Sri Lanka record out of the four records that were shattered at the National Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium last weekend. She clocked in at 4 minutes, 09.12 seconds to shatter the record that was set by Nimali Liyanarachchi in 2019. He returned a time of 13.97 seconds to shatter a 24-year-old record set by Mahesh Perera in 1997. The other Sri Lanka record was set by long jumper Sarangi Silva who shattered her own record clearing 6.48m jumping against a -0.9 headwind. In other events, Aruna Dharshana and Amasha de Silva won the 200m.

Australia blast through to semi finals
Australia joined traditional rivals England in the semi finals of the T20 World Cup as they flattened the West Indies by eight wickets in 16.2 overs in their last group 1 qualifying round match in Abu Dhabi yesterday. Opener David Warner who entered the tournament not in the best of form smashed his way to an unbeaten 89 from 56 balls to set the course for Australia after the West Indies set them a 158 target. With no need for any press of the panic button, Warner and Marsh drove the final nails into the coffin of the West Indies with a stand of 124 runs to seal the result and a place in the semi finals. With the exit of Gayle probably for the last time wearing the West Indies colours, Australian paceman Josh Hazelwood sent back Nicholas Pooran for 4 and two balls later had Roston Chase bowled for a duck that left the West Indies at 35 for 3. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard made a top score of 44 but it was too late a contribution as they signed off with just a single win from five encounters in the tournament.

CB orders immediate conversion of foreign currency earnings to rupees

Sri Lanka is over-regulating the foreign exchange sector by ordering to convert all or most foreign earnings into rupees, and this could also affect billions of dollars in remittances by migrant workers, according to experts. This will only aggravate the chronic foreign exchange crisis facing the country. The Central Bank (CB) directive to convert all foreign exchange earnings to rupees with effect from November 1, is also expected to affect FDI (foreign direct investments) and global rankings as a ‘business friendly nation’. That has a huge impact on export earnings and a general reluctance by some exporters and also professional service providers to bring back their earnings,” said a financial expert at a large export venture.

COVID death toll moves up by 20
November 6, 2021 04:37 pmThe total number of people who died of COVID-19 infection in Sri Lanka moved up as 20 more fatalities were confirmed by the Director-General of Health Services on Friday (November 05). The new development has pushed the official death toll from the virus outbreak in the country to 13,841. The latest victims include 10 males and 10 females, the Department of Government Information said. According to official data, 06 deaths were reported among elderly people aged above 60 years. In addition, 14 people aged between 30-59 years have also fallen victim to the virus infection.

COVID- 628 cases in total confirmed within the day
The daily count of COVID-19 cases confirmed in Sri Lanka moved to 628 today (November 05) as 146 more people were tested positive for the virus, the Epidemiology Unit said. According to the Government Information Department, one returnee from overseas is also among the new infections. This brings the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the country to 544,013. As many as 514,573 recoveries and 13,821 deaths have been confirmed in Sri Lanka since the outbreak of the pandemic. More than 15,600 active cases in total are currently under medical care, official figures showed.
