Their mother, Hilda Manson, from Leeds, was given 'miracle drug' DES in the US and then in the UK after she suffered several miscarriages. She developed breast cancer in her 70s, and died from Alzheimer's aged 86. The Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology estimates 10,000 patients were given DES during pregnancy, but because there are no records, the true scale of the tragedy is unknown. Women who took the drug – 'DES mothers' – are thought to be 30 per cent more at risk of developing breast cancer. Women took this in good faith, yet may have caused lasting harm to their children and grandchildren.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had recently noted the need to engage in practical approaches to address issues rather than following textbook theories. Referring to the Agriculture Ministry, the President had noted that while the ministry secretary appointed by him was removed by the Minister citing difficulties in carrying out work, the secretary appointed afterwards by the Minister had also failed at the task. The Excise Department says it would introduce a new protective sticker to be mandatorily displayed on locally-manufactured liquor bottles and cans. The decision was taken to prevent the sale of illicit liquor in the local market and smuggling of foreign liquor bottles into the country, and to collect all due taxes payable to the Treasury through the sale of local and foreign liquor. A grace period of three months has been given to clear the existing stocks of liquor bottles and cans sold in the market without the protective sticker, the Excise Department’s Spokesperson Kapila Kumarasinghe said. It is expected that this protective sticker would be displayed on all liquor bottles and cans sold island-wide by April 01, 2022, he added. This mandatory protective sticker was implemented on all imported liquor nearly a year ago.
