Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday warned that the country’s democratic system would unravel if the PML-N-led coalition government was allowed to hold onto power any longer. Addressing a ceremony at K-P House in Islamabad, the former premier – who was muscled out of power in a parliamentary revolt earlier this year – said that democracy could not survive because a “turncoat” like Raja Riaz, a PTI dissident, has been appointed as opposition leader in the National Assembly. “If they stay in power, democracy cannot survive because a ‘turncoat’ Raja Riaz has been appointed Leader of Opposition [in the National Assembly].”He said the incumbent rulers were “destroying” all institutions of the county to rig the next elections and close down all corruption cases against them. The former premier said the United States “installed” the incumbent rulers into power because they can be controlled easily as their assets were stashed abroad. Likewise, my government was the first in the country’s history which opened shelter homes for labourers, he added.

ISLAMABAD: The Skardu administration banned the highly controversial head of University of Baltistan (BoU) in the city on the occasion of President Arif Alvi arrival in Skardu to attend convocation of the university on Tuesday. Last year, a number of female UOB students accused Dr Naeem of sexual harassment, irking the local residents who staged protests for his ouster from the city. However, after a gap of nearly a year, Dr. Naeem recently regained the post using his connections, causing resentment among the locals once again. As per the audit reports of the university the controversial VC has also committed financial irregularities/corruption during his three years long tenure. The President Arif Alvi, after getting informed about the illegality in the selection process, has reportedly withheld the appointment of VC UoB to date.

"Our preliminary estimate is that additional measures will be needed to strengthen the budget and bring it in line with key programme objectives," Esther Perez Ruiz told Reuters. He, however, added that his government was confident they could adjust the budget to bring the IMF on board and was hopeful of securing a successful review this month. As per the parliamentary traditions, the Leader of the Opposition initiates the ‘general discussion’ on budgetary proposals. But 123 members of the largest party in this house, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are not present in the House. In their absence, Speaker Parvaiz Ashraf felt forced to ‘recognise’ Raja Riaz as the Opposition Leader. You can thus easily imagine the “tough time”, Raja Riaz might have given to the government through his unnecessarily lengthy speech, faking ‘critical evaluation’ of budgetary proposals. To prevent a huge embarrassment on the first day of ‘general discussion’ on budgetary proposals, Khawaja Asif, the defence minister, rushed to Tanvir.

Since the creation of Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan (GoP) has been borrowing, which started with the first financial aid request from the US. In contrast, the elite of Pakistan has been borrowing from the government of Pakistan without any sense of guilt or remorse. And, we have seldom heard if ordinary citizens have their house loans waived off or written off. Further, new and novel ways have been devised to steal from the GoP and its people. Thus, GoP and its ordinary citizens have been exploited with impunity and no one has ever been held accountable for this.

On Monday, Hamid revealed that Imran Khan himself admitted that reference against Justice Isa was a 'mistake'. Senior lawyers believe that Hamid Khan's re-joining is significant as consultation with him would prevent Imran Khan from further embarrassments on legal fronts. During the PTI's government, Hamid Khan was also very critical of the undue influence of security establishment in the workings of the executive. Interestingly, the Independent Lawyers Group, (also known as Asma Jahangir Group), is closed to the coalition government led by the PML-N. Observers believe that this is a sign of Imran Khan's rising popularity in the legal fraternity since his removal as PM.

The decision by a district sessions judge to allow for under-trial prisoners (UTPs) to be produced before the court through video link is a commendable step forward. As a result of this decision, UTPs will now be allowed to appear for their hearings via video link through Adiala Jail, instead of having to first be held in the poorly maintained and crowded Bakshi Khana in F-8 and then be brought to court, leading to logistical issues, not to mention the fuel cost incurred as a result. Under the new model, UTPs that have their cases fixed for evidence will still be produced before the court. A video link appearance is likely to take up less time of the court, provided all the technical details have been figured out in advance. Saving on costs, making the lives of UTPs and courts easier and allowing for a potentially efficient process is a worthwhile endeavour and one worth replicating.
