Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s recent allegations have sent shockwaves rippling through Pakistan’s political landscape. The idea that high-ranking military officials allegedly meddled in the political affairs of the country raises serious concerns about our democratic principles and how much they matter on a national level. We cannot afford to dismiss these allegations as mere political manoeuvring; they strike at the heart of our democratic process and demand the attention of the public as well as those in power. Pakistan stands at a political and economic crossroads, and the choices we make now will shape the future of our nation. It is high time that the nation stands up for transparency and the principles of democracy that form the bedrock of our society.

In the realm of academic theory, the concept of the public mandate holds a significant position, especially within representative democracies. It embodies the perceived legitimacy to govern, derived from popular support expressed through electoral processes. Yet, in Pakistan’s tumultuous political landscape, the notion of a public mandate has often been elusive, tangled within a history marked by prolonged periods of martial law and a political legacy steeped in martyrdom. They vehemently argued that despite allegations of rigging, the overwhelming support for Khan and his party was undeniable, positioning PTI as the rightful inheritor of the people’s mandate. Amidst the chaos of an unpredictable and disappointing electoral outcome, PTI crafted its own narrative, one that portrayed the party as the aggrieved party whose mandate was being stolen.

The nation barely made it through the teaser; apparently, PDM 2.0 will have a full five-year spectacle. Despite botching their initial attempt at “saving” Pakistan, this motley crew of “patriotic” politicians will soon try again. The way this agreement came to be would irritate PML-N supporters as well as PTI supporters who voted for change. They were informed that Nawaz Sharif would take office for a fourth term as prime minister following these elections. It was a sombre reminder of all that he had accomplished and was forced to forfeit over his career when he chose to hand over the government to Shehbaz Sharif instead.
