In recent years, Pakistan has seen severe economic unrest marked by a declining economy, excessive inflation, unsustainable debt, poor investments, and a balance-of-payments problem. The political unrest that has persisted since the PTI was overthrown in 2022 has only made the economic turmoil worse. The nation just avoided defaulting last summer thanks to an emergency lifeline provided by the IMF. This image highlights the enormous task that the PML-N’s incoming minority government and its chosen finance minister will face. Everyone agrees that the most pressing task facing the incoming finance minister will be to swiftly negotiate a new extended programme with the IMF to replace the current interim facility.

The Ministry of Finance’s announcement foreshadowing a potential decline in inflation sparks a glimmer of hope amidst Pakistan’s economic turmoil. As Pakistan tiptoes through reforms under the IMF Standby Arrangement, managing inflation is not just another box to tick, it is the linchpin holding our economic stability together. For the time being, our economic resurgence is the number one priority, and we cannot afford to play fast and loose with inflationFor a huge chunk of our population, our inflation rates can mean the difference between putting food on the table or going hungry. It is also the measure of our economic resilience and the litmus test for our policymakers’ competence. Keeping that in mind, we must move towards meaningful reforms, and reclaim control of our economic destiny.

Even with a missing tooth — one of the upper middle incisors, no less — Chicago Blackhawks rookie Louis Crevier still flashes a huge grin when talks about how he lost it. “I had a couple of crooked ones, like they’re still a little bit out of place right now, (I needed) a couple of stitches,” he said. “The missing teeth aren’t bad, it’s more I’ve got to get braces now too. But I’m a real hockey player with the missing tooth. “I don’t think the look (of a missing tooth) is the toughness part,” he said.

A higher likelihood of default and a higher level of investment risk are indicated by the grade in the context of weak debt affordability. Due to the liquidity crisis and issues with external vulnerability, international rating agencies have long placed the nation’s economy in the category of “speculative grade,” meaning that there is a very high credit risk. As a result, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves fell, raising worries about the nation’s declining capacity to repay its international debt. This is necessary to draw in more funding from bilateral and multilateral partners and lower the chances of default. This indicates that for the current fiscal year, the new setup will probably be able to pay off its remaining foreign debt.

The role of the United Nations has indeed been under much criticism.
