“I’ll be the first to say that we don’t want to see (Donald) Trump reelected to the White House,” Hammoud told AFP in an interview. In 2020, Dearborn voters overwhelmingly supported Biden and their ballots could tip the scales in Michigan — a crucial swing state that may ultimately decide the White House winner in November’s election. Hammoud’s profile surged in January after he declined an invitation to meet with Biden campaign officials seeking to shore up the Muslim vote. Then in 2022, he became the second in a trio of new Muslim mayors in the southeast Michigan cities of Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and Hamtramck. What will he do to help prevent the unraveling of American democracy and the fabric of our society?”

Vietnamese President To Lam was full of praise for his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, congratulating him on his recent re-election. The United States has criticised the visit for giving a platform for President Putin to promote his war of aggression in Ukraine. Vietnam still values the historic ties it has with Russia even as it works to improve its relationship with Europe and the US. This is also true in other Asian countries, where the Ukraine war is seen as a faraway crisis.

The role of conflicts, and that of militaries themselves, is often not discussed when it comes to discussing causes of global warming. One apparent reason for not recognising the environmental havoc caused by militaries and conflicts is the absence of data. Besides the global warming and other ecological costs related to varied military campaigns, climate change itself has become a catalyst for conflict. In Pakistan as well, scant attention is given to the military’s broader ecological footprint or to the ecological consequences of its external and internal postures or actions. Conversely, there is ample scholarship demonstrating how militaries of neighbouring countries can use environmental diplomacy to co-manage ecologically threatened areas.
